When I was 5 I was listening to Zeppelin & Floyd and Airplane and CSN along with the Archies and the Monkies and Beatles and Peter Pan 45’s. I am sure some adults would have expressed the attitudes shown here about Zep & Floyd back then. I almost forgot from age 2 I would rock out in my playpen to Innagadadavida that the upstairs Teenager use to blast all day. Just Saying. 😉 Jim ---

That’s assuming the kid can actually make out the lyrics. I dunno about the particlar ones **Askia** was playing, but a lot of the rap I’ve heard comes across as a pounding beat overlaid with incomprehensible shouting. **Askia** , that was one hell of a funny rant. If you’d left out “white” it would still have been funny but that was the touch that made it hilarious. Racist? Sheesh! It’s self-deprecating humor that plays off white-black stereotypes beautifully. ---

I’m just so baffled that peolpe think that such language is appropriate for a five-year-old. I’ve enjoyed debating with you in the past, but I’m going to pass on this, as I feel it would be as frustrating as debating that water is wet. To believe that we should not protect our children from ugliness and seek to teach them certain things when they are of an age able to understand them is simply beyond my mental abilities. Okay, Devil’s advocate time, since **magellan’s** not stepping up: The music **Askia** was listening to described guns, shootings (I figure that’s what “when the smoke settle” refers to), a world full of violence. “Fuck them other niggas cause I’m down for my niggas!” is a sentiment devoid of compassion or positive sentiment for one’s fellow humans, and encourages an us-versus-them mentality. “Niggas” is probably the most offensive word in American English when coming from the mouth of a white child. I think you can make a case that a five-year-old ought to be protected from stories about brutal violence if it’s possible, and that furthermore you need to be careful, for their own safety and for the happiness of others around them, about how they’re introduced to potentially volatile language. That’s the case I would make, were I **magellan**. However, I’m with **Polycarp** here: it’s a tempest in a teapot, I think, and it’s unlikely the kid has any idea what those lyrics are talking about, and if he does, it’s very possible that his mom has explained to him th edifference between fantasy and reality in a developmentally appropriate manner.
