What they never really showed was that a MASH unit had different surgical shifts. When they were swamped it went out the window (“Both shifts report to triage immediately!”) but the regular routine would have other surgeons working while Our Heroes, who likely just finished a shift were drinking. You just never saw the second shift, just like you never saw the night shift on the Enterprise.\* \*- “Data’s Day” was the only exception I can think of. ---
