Actually, Joe Sixpack fucked hiself. I can retire any time I want. I have my health and dental insurance - which i can keep upon retirement. I am in reasonably good health. I don’t have any debt except for a nearly paid off mortgage. I’m not fucked, but Joe Sixpack is. His auto factory job and steel mill job is never coming back. His health and unemployment benefits will disappear, his job protections will disappear (if he is even still working), he’ll never get a pay increase, etc etc etc. So he’s already fucked but just doesn’t know it. And the jobs that are left will keep disappearing. ---

Reaching a crescendo around the last Aug-September time-frame, the media, pundits and high-ranking elected government officials everywhere were wringing their hands about some sort of Republican/GOP crises. The cries were strident and alarming: The GOP as we know it is dead. Republican in-fighting is tearing the party apart. Unprecedented, etc, etc. Now the other shoe has dropped. ---

It is fair to bring out the racial aspects of drug laws that make crimes more typically committed by black people have much more severe punishment. Crack cocaine being 100 times more serious than powder cocaine, for example. It is also fair to question “get tough” policies in general, when it results in one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. It is fair to point out the impact that such policies have on racial minorities. That’s not calling a particular person “racist.” If I told you the policies you were advocating perpetuated institutional racism in this country, I would hope that you wouldn’t take it as a personal insult. ---

Here’s my strategy: we give to charities for various reasons, and take the deductions off our income tax. This year our income took a substantial jump because we’re having to start cashing out our IRAs, and so will our tax payment come April. We are doing an estimate this month of our upcoming tax burden and plan to write checks this month to charities in the amount of what we would normally write to the IRS, then take the deduction and try to get our tax bill close to zero. Hey, if it’s good enough for Tiny Hands, the Koch-suckers and other billionaires, it’s good enough for the common man. ---
