We didn't try to give our kid a popular name

the subway dude!! it ranks at 137 for '05 and it’s cracked the top 100 recently.

My future baby names are Aniket and Shirin* and I am positive there are only going to be a handful of kids to be named that in the US seeing as there are about 10 parsis left and Aniket seems to be favoured by Maharashtrians.

*I’m ethnic so it’s okay.

I named my son Wolfgang at his father’s suggestion. He (the father) is a guitar player, and Eddie Van Halen had just named his son Wolfgang. So when people ask me if he was named after Mozart, I have to tell them the truth: I much prefer Bach.

The father’s first choice was “Desmond”, but I couldn’t see naming my firstborn son after the ONLY Beatles song I DON’T like.

I checked and my youngest son’s name isn’t in the top 1000.
Oh god, I’m one of those people.

Jilly-bean will not haunt her. it will make her smile. So says ShelliBean, who has had the same treatment all her life.

My math teacher’s daughter was named Shirin. It’s a pretty name.

How about “G’Zyss?”

Yeah, but you just know the airbrush guy is going to fuck up the lettering, and people will call him Zeus and then it’s all Jets and Sharks with kids with god-sized egos.

My name is Anna, but my parents called me Annie from day one. I was never in a class with another Annie. I have three younger siblings: Nicole, Paul, and Susan. My parents didn’t realize how popular Nicole was when they used that name; they wanted a “Nicky” and would have named her Nicholas if she’d ben a boy. Paul and Susie have completely unique names for their age group though, with the added benefit of having everyone spell and pronounce them correctly on the first try.

When I was in third grade, we had three boys with the same name. I realized that statistically speaking, I had a very good chance of marrying a boy with that name. I was right!

I have a common name for my age and I was so sure that I wasn’t going to do that to my kids. poor kids. All but one has a name that isn’t just popular, it’s in the top ten for their year. sigh. The middle one though, her name is so unique that I would be surprised to hear of five women in the country who share it. It’s not a unique spelling, just a name that hasn’t been popular for 150 years.

we just chose what we liked and were done with it.

Emma?

My apologies, I’m sure you don’t have an accent anyhow. It’s too bad you got turned off from Rocky and Bullwinkle, one of the greatest cartoons ever. I always liked the name anyhow, it works well for Ms. Richardson and Ms. Henstridge.

No problem. I don’t quite think I have the humour for Rocky and Bullwinkle these days anyway.

But yes, there are quite a few lovely women who share my name.

Don’t despair just yet. My cousin’s wife had a beeyyooooooootifull pink baby room all prepared for their darling little girl. Benjamin is settling in just fine, and will probably have a blue or green room before psychic scars become permanent.

To quote Archy McNally, “One never knows, do one?”
