We get a signal from a distant advanced civilization…

This would be the only sensible strategy. We could send periodic messages back to them; after four thousand years or so they will start recieving them (assuming their interstellar spacecraft has some sort of sensor pointed in our direction, which would be sensible on their part); they could then start sending updates and answers to or questions back to us, which we would recieve about 9000 years from now,. Over the next 41000 years we could have an increasingly complex interaction, exhanging data and (hopefully) exhanging technologies.

By the time they finally arrive 50,000 years from now we might be roughly on a technologically equal level, unless they have been keeping something secret from us.

Indeed, it is entirely possible that we will be very much more advanced than they are by that time- they are presumably encapulated within a smallish craft, with limited technological and physical resources, while we have the mass and energy of an entire solar systenm to play with. We might expect them to teach us a great deal - but in practice it might be us that teaches them.

After all, a spacecraft travelling at 0.1c does not necessarily imply fantastically advanced technology, or science that is radically different from our own; indeed these travellers might be weakened and depleted by their journey after tens of thousands of years, and need us much more than we need them.

And we should not for get that after 10,000 years we could have made direct contact with the civilisation that originally sent the spacecraft, and we might get even more useful data from that source (despite the 10,000 year light-travel-time delay).

Alternately we might witness the final collapse of that civilisation, and have to inform the travellers that they are now (probably) the only survivors.

The travelers have their own directional radio receiver.

The spacecraft coming to us is a project of some distant advanced civilization (DAC) government 5,000 light years away.

I posit that, like here, opinions in DAC regarding almost every controversial question vary over time, including the question of whether sending the spacecraft was a good idea. So the spacecraft will have been recalled home before any final DAC collapse.

That would involve decelerating from 0.1c to zero, then accelerating to 0.1c in the opposite direction. Not a straigtforward proposition, and even if they returned to their home they might be unable to assist in any significant way.

Damn, we have to keep some primitive radio receiver operational for the next 50,000 years just so we can hear those reminder messages?

I’m sure we’ll have quantum entanglement at a distance for communication. Should be trivial in a few years, same as fusion.

We should have nuclear fusion in thirty years or maybe 30,000 years.
