It’s REALLY interesting how much Republican apologists want to rest on their social justice laurels. Yes, we know that the Republican Party was the party of Lincoln and that the Republicans were the ones who did the most post-CW to advance African-American political equality. What have you guys done in the last 50 years or so? Political parties change over time. Sometime in the mid-60s, the Democrats and the Republicans polarized. Prior to then, both parties had extensively-wide political spectra…there were conservative, moderate and liberal members of both parties. There were racist, conservative Democrats and very liberal Republicans. But that mostly ended…the far-right Democrats split from the party after the Civil Rights Acts, first forming their own Dixiecrat party and then joining the Republicans. The Republicans have been purging their party of anyone to the left of Pinochet for the last 30 or 40 years.

Y’all are mostly reactionary dinosaurs. There are NO liberal Republicans now. There are very few actual moderate Republicans. Unfortunately, MY party is drifting to the right now as your rejects join up and pull us in a conservative direction. I was very glad to see that at least convention delegates are liberal enough to produce the platform we saw at the DNC this year, even if the steering committee felt they had to shoehorn in God and Jerusalem because the Republicans raised an eyebrow in their direction.

Given how easily Democrats resort to racial slurs when attacking minority Republicans, I have to think Democrats are just opportunistic. Is the GOP really any different than they were? They’ve always been the party of small government and color blind policies. THe Democrats, on the other hand, have always been the party of “Let’s distribute patronage to our interest groups to maintain power”. The coalitions shuffle, but the Democratic system remains the same: those in the tent receive, those outside the tent pay.

Revisionist history. Democrats went from being a race conscious party that favored whites, to a race conscious party that favored minorities. Republicans never changed.

As John Roberts said, the only way to stop discriminating based on race is to stop discriminating based on race. Yet after all these years, democrats STILL support discriminating based on race.

> Revisionist history.

If I may quote a very wise man, BWAHAHAHAHA! When the party of “the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not predominate numerically,” of “Crime rates and irresponsibility among Negroes are a fact of life which must be faced,” of [Strom Thurmond’s recruitment due to opposition to civil rights](http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F70711F939591B7A93C4A81782D85F408685F9), of Jesse Helms whistling Dixie to an African American senator–when this party claims to be color-blind, I need to remind them that this doesn’t mean you see the whole world in black and white.

Indeed, what passes for color-blindness among mainstream Republicans is the very essence of historical revisionism: it’s acting as though our country’s racist history never happened, acting as though we can set the reset button on this issue without addressing centuries of legalized, formalized brutality, and everything will be fine.

Yes, of course there were racists in the Democratic party in the past; yes, of course there are still a few. But there’s a reason why an overwhelming majority of African Americans support the Democratic party, and it’s not because of patronage, as the racist revisionists would like to have it. It’s because the Democratic party is willing, on balance, to face up to our nation’s history and not to try to press some magic reset button and pretend that the past has no effect on the present.

Democrats went from being a race conscious party that favored whites, to a race conscious party that favored minorities. Republicans never changed.

As John Roberts said, the only way to stop discriminating based on race is to stop discriminating based on race. Yet after all these years, democrats STILL support discriminating based on race.

That is a complete load of shit.

Being against preserving white privilege is hardly the same as favoring minorities over whites.

I know lots of people have a difficult time accepting a multicultural US, but we are the future.

I would change that sentence to ask if \*\*adaher \*\*has anything relevant to contribute to this board.

Derailing threads seems to be a speciality.

EVERYONE: this thread is purportedly about the convention. General discussions about the parties may be taken up in separate threads, but drop them from this thread, now.

Blacks have voted overwhelmingly for the Democrat in presidential elections since 1936. Your statement must be false on its face, since that would be about 30 years before the Southern Strategy.

A couple days post convention, what are your lasting impressions? Mine are:

GOP convention-
Weird old guy mumbling at a chair.
I can’t remember a single speech that was interesting, much less memorable.

DNC convention-
Bill Clinton- funny, engaging, easy to understand;
Gabby Giffords- moving;
Gov. Granholm- bringing down the house.
Overall, awesome.

**Ca3799** , I remember a few other things from the Republican convention. For instance, in his _I Have a Me_ speech, Chris Christie gave a succinct description of the essence of the Republican argument against Obama. In regards to the economy, he said “It doesn’t matter how we got here.”

Don’t worry about what caused us to be in the shitter. Just worry about the fact that Obama hasn’t cleaned everything up yet.

I just watched Kerry’s speech this morning. Partisan as hell, and a flat-out no-holds-barred attack on the other side, but a good speech that helped fire up the crowd. That’s part of what you need at a national convention. I’m also hard pressed to find factual flaws in Kerry’s opinion-driven speech. I’m pretty sure Governor Palin said during the Couric interview that “you can see Russia form parts of Alaska.” The more famous line that “You can see Russia from my house!” was said by Tina Fey _playing_ Sarah Palin. But Kerry referenced the first line, not the second.

I’m too lazy to look up the thread to see who suggested that Kerry might be the next Secretary of State, but I think you’re right.

Finally, what parallel universe did I drop into where the RNC did not reference military service at all, but the DNC had several speakers in service, or introduced by peopel in service or with family members in service, AND had chants of “USA! USA!”.

I’m not sure I like the idea of tapping Kerry for SoS. Not so much because of anything about Kerry (I think he would probably be fantastic), but because I really hate the idea of stripping the Democratic Senate bench again. We could have had Napolitano instead of McCain in 2010. We could have had Sibelius instead of Brownback. I don’t like taking active/potential Democratic Senate candidates out of commission.
