I can’t quite manage the Ents. Orcs, Elves, Black Riders, Dwarves, no problem, but Tom Bombadil I can’t handle at all, and have a difficult time seeing the Ents as “real”.

Vacation in Sequoia NP sometime. 🙂 They’re my favorite Tolkien creatures by far.

"I sit beside the fire and think
Of how the world will be
When winter comes without a spring
That I shall ever see.

For still there are so many things
That I have never seen,
In every wood, in every spring,
There is a different green…"

Verses from one of Bilbo’s poems. It always makes me weepy.

Tolkien compared the destructive power of the Ents–which they used against Saruman–to the slower power of great trees, that can break stone.

In several older Houston neighborhoods (like mine) the developers planted live oaks along the streets. A century later, the huge gnarled branches meet over the streets, turning some into dark tunnels. And their roots have ripped the sidewalks into huge concrete blocks, so askew that walking is hazardous. Yes, I can understand the Ents.

But nobody “gets” Tom Bombadil. He just wandered into the story. Even Tolkien was somewhat puzzled.
