He has nothing to lose by doing this and as noted potentially gains positioning himself and his vision of what the party should be in the in the future (especially assuming a Trump loss), as opposed to leaving that post-Trump space for Ryan to possess uncontested. If Trump wins then he is positioning to run against him in 2020. This was not just a regular GOP primary season. As has been said many times this cycle potentially redefines what the GOP brand primarily consists of. Trump has won the nomination but the fight for the GOP brand name continues and will extend past the November election. The party may split or one or another segment may slink along tail between its legs as part of the pack; that is not written yet and is what motivates the posturing. ---
