Cool. Thanks!
The hypothetical cigar is yours!
Very interesting. I had forgotten just how early that was.
Angelfire?
The first 2-3 years I used the internet, it seemed like Yahoo was the center of it all; not just searches but there directory (I’d waste a lot of time just bouncing around categories), Yahoo chat was a big deal, as well as their groups. They also acquired Geocities, which was the closest thing to having a social media account for me.
The Centre for the Easily Amused. Now LOOONG gone.
http://www.rinkworks.com is still around and updating? Cool.
It’s not a specific site but remember Webrings? That was a thing.
I always kinda wondered why they went away. It was a cool concept, especially for sites devoted to more esoteric interests (I’d imagine a Webring for something like Doctor Who or My Little Pony would get pretty bloated with sites in a hurry).
Okay, I’m going for the ultimate obscure.
“The US Department of Texture”
It was a fake US GOV website about creating the texture of the land around the US. Deadpan serious, with all the gov+ art speak, and funny at the same time. I think it may have been done as a college project. Aside from the author I may be the only person who remembers this.
Oh, also, on USENET does anyone remember the war between cows and some kind of marsupials? Or WoofChat?
I remember MeowChat. Was it the same thing? (People communicating with each other as their cats, in cat-speak)? It was kind of I Can Haz Cheezburger 1.0.
Yep, that was it, thanks.
Yep, WoofChat was people talking like their dogs. It was sweet harmless fun.
Thanks for the memory jostle. I remember so many of these sites.
This thread gives 30 year olds an opportunity to say “Get off my (virtual) lawn”.
As for the OP - Mr. T Ate My Balls is a classic.
I did not know that would link to aol (aohell)
Can’t believe I forgot this site I used to visit:
www.straightdope.com
I was on Usenet so much and so long ago I remember the first incidence ever (probably) of Spam. Some joker posted junk about a GREEN CARD LOTTERY (whatever that was) on every group. Before then it was basically rare and frowned upon to cross post too much. Everyone flipped out.
I also remember on Rec.arts.Starwars when someone first called the Power Droid Gonk. It became a huge thing that ended up spilling into canon.
Speaking of Usenet, anybody else remember Kibo, and Serdar Argic?
