I knew that my girlfriend preferred white gold, and what cut of diamond she liked best (she wasn’t shy about hinting around!). I secretly checked the size of some of her other rings, so I was pretty confident in the size. I read up on diamonds and picked out a stone myself, with the help of a jeweler, and picked up the finished ring a week or so later. It was actually a very enjoyable process. In the end, it fit perfectly and she loved it. She said yes, as expected, so I didn’t have to worry about returns. When it came time to pick out the wedding band, we went together and found something that she thought worked well with the engagement ring. My wedding band is a simple titanium ring that I ordered online, with our names and wedding date inscribed inside…cheap and light as a feather and I’m very happy with it, although if I need a bigger size at some point I’ll end up having to buy a replacement. ---

My now-husband proposed with a necklace and pendant, one that was symbolic and meaningful. MUCH more appropriate for us than a diamond ring. Once we were engaged, we then had to plan the wedding itself with 10 days’ notice (got laid off, my work visa went away), so we went to the mall to pick out rings. (We NEVER go to the mall). We wandered around looking at horrible rings in horrible stores, being our usual indecisive selves. We found ourselves in an Hawaiian jeweler, who had a silver ring inlaid with onyx and pearl - black and white, very graphic, not too girly or too manly. The one they had fit me, we ordered a matching one for him, and actually did the ceremony with a $10 Target ring for him. There’s another curious story about that ring.
