Weekly Comic Book Discussion 1/13/2005

BTW, I just realized why Jakeem could not summon the mighty Badhnesian Thunderbolt.
It’s because they’re in the past. The only Thunderbolt around is Johnny’s, who only responds to “Cei-U!”

Of course, Jakeem’s T-bold should be in the pink pen, but I’m sure that Geoff Johns will explain that away using some type of temporal mechanics. Y’know, the old “No person can exist in two places at the same time” kind of crap.
Many people I discuss comics with generally dislike Loeb - particularly Batman/Superman. Particularly the introduction of Kara.

Understandable. I kinda figured as much after I made my post upon reflection. Even after reading comments here about Superman/Batman here over the past few months, you can make a case Loeb’s stock has gone down. Conversely, many people I discuss comics with generally dislike Ed Brubaker, particular for his depiction and characterization of Catwoman (unlike the more free spirited, purple clad, non-goggle wearing she was in the '90s).

We call those people “wrong-headed.”

Heh. Point. Oh well, this is comics. Wait around long enough, and another version will show up eventually whether you want it or not.

I concur. For me, it was even worse, since I just got back into Aquaman last issue, and I’m still trying to feel out what’s the deal with his regular situation. (Why isn’t he in Atlantis? Why is San Diego underwater? Who’s Aquagirl? What’s up with the hand? How much control does he have over SD? etc.) Also, unlike the current Superman/Batman storyline (and Loeb ROOLZ, btw, I’d probably vote for him if I voted on those things  ), it didn’t have the “everything is wrong” vibe. Except for the confused air-breather, this could’ve been a normal issue. That said, I still enjoyed it. I just wish I knew what the hell is going on.

I also picked up JLA. the CSA is always fun. However, you lose serious credibility when you get beaten (if only momentarily) by the freaking Rainbow Raiders. i really enoy that Busiek is building off of JLA/Avengers.

I also picked up the TPB of Another Nail. I loved the Nail. It was everything i wanted from an Elseworld, familar characters in a logically divergent reality. This one, not so much. OK, Barda/Scott/GL was really cool, but the rest of it was pretty blah. It felt like a normal story. Aside from a few relatively minor plot and character points, there’s no reason to make this one an Elseworlds rather than normal continuity.

Uh-oh. What do you call those of us who think that all these modern Catwomen are poseurs and long for the days when Catwoman was a classy dame who was in it for the thrill of it (and to get Batman’s attention) and was so damned good at what she did that she could fight Bats to a standstill…in an evening gown and high heels?

:stuck_out_tongue:

I believe you’re mistaken.

The clues point to Baron Zemo. It would be horribly out of character for Hawkeye to stab anybody in the heart; he left his wife because he thought she took killing too lightly. Also, I doubt Hawkeye knows where Prussia is. Zemo has snuck in twice as a disguised swordsman, and this would be very much in character for him.

I dunno…it’s a good point, but Hawkeye could have known that Strucker wouldn’t be killed by a sword. but I’ll grant you the “Prussian” thing–on the other hand, it’s Fabian Nicezia (sp) and < cough > sparkling, well characterized dialogue has never been his strong point.

So, I was talking to Dan Slott about two weeks ago, and… Let’s see. Issue 3 of Spidey/Torch should be really really good for all the gearheads.
Also: "Meanwhile… " “As seen in issue #33 - Daring Dan” and . o O (If only she knew!) Captions, annotations, and thought balloons might just be coming back to comics. What he told me about She-Hulk made me realize that it’s Moonlighting in superhero clothing.

Hm. What else… well, we talked about What If’s, I had a good one (What if the FF were Feared and Loathed)… and a bunch of other stuff I’m not going to say, except to look out for a “Defenders” type book that should have a one panel Slapstick cameo eventually. Great guy, really knows his stuff, really cares.

Slapstick? Oh, I’m there. Even if only for a panel.

I believe you’re mistaken.

Killgrave describes the person cleaning his boots as a superhero.
