Weekly Comic Book Discussion 7/8/2004

I know what you mean. The Starman trades have taken forever to come out anyway. The Starman One Million story was a thread that ran through the whole DC One Million trade though, so that one sort of made sense.

I haven’t had a chance to read most of my comics from this week yet. I did bring the new Twisted Toyfare Theater collection to read on my lunch break today! Yay!

I read Supreme Power too. I think it’s an ongoing series, not a mini. Lots of nekkid Not-Wonder Woman in this one.

Is this naked Zarda chick just completely bat-shit crazy or what? Nice to look at to be sure, but bat-shit crazy.

Also, It was interesting to see a little of the Batman-Robin relationship start to show in the Nighthawk-Blur team-up.

See how crazy you’re not after you spend 2000 years in a cave and then emerge as a superhottie.

Power Princess is making it awfully difficult to read my comics at the workplace on Wednesday afternoons. I’m having to keep looking over my shoulder ready to flip the page to some workplace safe violence.

Starjammers #1 - Yay! Starjammers! Hmm… art’s not bad… but where the heck are they?

DC Comics Presents : Batman #1 - Heh. Retro fun. Nothing special, though.

The New Invaders #0 - Blazing Skull rocks. His almost random comments throughout the battle were the redeeming feature of Avengers #497-499.

Transformers Generation One #6 - They didn’t explain enough for my liking…

Firestorm #3 - Get me Ronnie Raymond, dangit!

Detective Comics #796 - Whoa. Lousy cover - but the inside’s pretty darn good. I like.

Swamp Thing #5 - Bad, wicked Sargon. Well, at least now we can get the real plot moving.

Witches #3 - I like the art in this series. I’ll give it a few more issues.
BPRD : Plague of Frogs #5 - Whee! Abe Sapien Originy goodness.

Powers #1 - Same great taste, different company logo.

Birds of Prey #69 - There’s a thoughtballoon on the cover. That’s odd in this day and age.

Alpha Flight #5 - Consistently a funny book.

Supreme Power #11 - Yes, the team’s finally starting to shape up. I wonder how they’ll come to cooperate.

Exiles #49 - Pick o’the week, if only for the Impossible Man. We don’t see enough of the silly characters in this modern grim and griitty age.

After Supreme Power #10 and Outsiders #12, I don’t think I ever need to see another naked, decaying woman ever again.

I got my Batman: The Animated Series - Volume 1 four-DVD set this week, does that count?

(And I still can’t find last week’s Transformers stuff in my area…)

DC Comics Presents–Didn’t read yet
Birds of Prey–Didn’t read yet
Firestorm–< singsong voice >C’moooon guys. Let’s go somewhere with this…it’s getting oooo-old. < /voice > Kidding aside, I’m getting bored. He’s got maybe 2 issues left to convince me.

Fantastic Four–I am having so much fun with this. I love Waid’s take on the Wingless Wizard (what a dumb name), I like that he’s not breaking other people’s toys (re Paste Pot Pete), I like that he’s creating new characters. An excellent book.

Invaders–Barf. I hate the art, I hate the writing. This was pulled for me by mistake and it’s goin’ back next week.

Loki–I dunno. I’m vaguely interested even though it’s not all that good.

Powers–Page umm…the pages aren’t numbered…the page where the woman is giving the TV interview is about as strong a pro-gun stance as I’ve ever seen printed in a comic…it coulda been written by the N.R.A. And since comics, when they do dip into politics tend left (not way left, but a bit), it was a nice change. (Please, I know I said “NRA” and “pro-gun”, but can we not, just this once, have a hijack? Please?). Also, Bendis’s dialogue annoyed me in this issue. Every single fcking other fcking word was a f*cking obscenity. Yeah, some people talk that way…but in this issue, everyone did. I can’t wait for next issue though!

Spider-Girl–See the Firestorm review. I’m getting bored.

Supreme Powers–It’s weird. I don’t like this book. I don’t like any of the characters, the story is just strange and very, veeerrrryyyy slloooooowwww…but it’s so damned well-written that I’m hooked.

Thanos–Dropping it this issue. Blah

Thor–The more I read the “Disassembled” stuff, the more it seems like the creators are saying “Hey! The 80’s grim-n-gritty! That’s a new direction.” Unfortunately, outside of a few comics, I hated the grim-n-gritty stuff.

Ultimate Spider-Man–Good stuff. And

Witches–Didn’t read yet

Uncanny X-Men–Pretty, but awful. When Alan Davis goes, so do I.

Tom Strong–Eh.

Swamp Thing–Good stuff. I liked the (I hope) final fate of Tefe, a character who started off annoying and got worse as time went by.

Justice League Adventures–Best. Issue. Ever (of this book)

Detective–Wow! The gem of the week. Who the hell is “Anderson Gabrych”? A solid story told in one issue with drama, pacing and characterization we haven’t seen on Batman (excluding Rucka) since Moench left, pre-Crisis. Ladies and Gentledopers, you wanna read the best Batman story of the last few years? Read this book. Hell, if nothing else, read it for a Batman who’s a detective first and a thug second.
finally, the PS238 trade paperback. If you’re not reading this one, give it a shot. A very funny cartoon book about an elementary school for very young metahumans. I mean, like kindergarten/first grade level. The "Modok Jr."type character is hysterical (“Ooooh!” sez one tot “We’re having Beanie Weenies and Mac-cheese!” / “I presume then” sez Modok Jr (I can’t remember his name) “…that Iron Chef Italian is not preparing lunch then?”). If you liked Sugar and Spike, this is a book worth trying.

Fenris

Anyone else not realize the LIBERTY MEADOWS SOURCEBOOK was a “sourcebook” and not a new issue. Damn.
