So, Weezer just released an all cover album, following up on the success of their cover version of Africa. I’ve been streaming it this afternoon and really like it. They’re all over the place from Paranoid to No Scrubs. I play a lot of music on bar jukeboxes in Chicago, most of these songs are going to be in heavy rotation, I really liked the Africa cover so I’m really glad to hear them trying a lot of other genres. ---

I was intrigued, so listened to the Africa cover. It was too close to the original to be of any special interest to me. And where is Rivers Cuomo? ---

I’ve listened to at least a little of each of these songs, some of the tracks I’ve let run to the end. I suppose if someone has ever yearned to spend the night listening to Rivers Cuomo do karaoke at a Holiday Inn in Waterloo, IA, this might be a good album. ---

Yeah, I just listened to Happy Together, Take On Me, and Everybody Wants to Rule the World, and I just don’t get it. “Take On Me” actually had a nice moment in there with the instrumental bridge, but, overall, it doesn’t work for me. Judging by the comments, the Weezer fans like all of it (and I do enjoy Weezer, especially circa _Pinkerton_), so they’ve done their job. ---

Interesting. A bunch of songs I liked at one time or another but after hearing them a few hundred times each over the years I’m kind of sick of all of them. ---

I like Weezer but I dislike covers albums, especially when it’s all just straight-up covers. It’s like Christmas albums: either you have a unique take on “Jingle Bells,” in which case nobody cares, or you are doing a traditional rendition that literally everyone and their mother does, and still _nobody cares_. ---

I’m in Leslie’s corner: I keep trying to be with Matt, but nothing has had much of lasting impression after Pinkerton. This cover album has left less of an impression that any other post-Pinkerton album. My favorite post-Pinkerton album is the Return of the Rentals. 😃 ---

Nearly all of them are songs already overplayed to death on original release, and ubiquitous staples on radio formats through the years, that at best I have no urge to seek them out again for a new listen. Had they tried to breathe some new life into more neglected classics, then it would have been more worthwhile.
