Considering that there is a thread discussing a kid setting himself on fire after seeing the same on MTV, I’d say they’re just covering all their bases.
In the over-litigious, quick to blame someone else society we live in. I think MTV is just erring on the side of cautiousness.
It’s not just MTV it was other stations that would show the video didn’t want the word Joint used so they edited the song, cut out the word joint, played it backwards and put it back in.
One bit of censorship I never understood was when CMT (Country Music Television) gave Garth Brooks video of “When the Thunder Rolls” the heave-ho. Why? Because it had a scene in which a man hits his wife.
Cheatin’ songs are a staple of country music, and “When the Thunder Rolls” is about a cheating husband. In the video, he hits his wife after she confronts him about his affair. The radio version of the song says nothing about physical violence, and it was all over the airwaves.
I remember being so angry that CMT would censor like this. I mean, come on. They certainly could have done something better. Perhaps a hotline number for domestic violence victims after the video or something. Or, if they really felt that it was something kids shouldn’t see, play it after prime time. I also remember the absolute outrage I heard on the radio–even the DJ’s from stations that had different formats were screaming from the rooftops.
What puzzles me the most about censorship in music and television is the seeming lack of rhyme or reason. If it’s there, I sure as hell can’t figure it out.
The only scene from Austin Powers edited by TBS Superstation:
Guard: One Swedish-made … enlarger. Austin: [to Vanessa] That’s not mine. Guard: One credit card receipt for Swedish-made … enlarger signed by Austin Powers. Austin: I’m telling ya baby that’s not mine. Guard: One warranty card for Swedish-made … enlarger pump, filled out by Austin Powers. Austin: I don’t even know what this is! This sort of thing ain’t my bag, baby. Guard: One book, “Swedish-made … Enlargers And Me: This Sort of Thing Is My Bag Baby,” by Austin Powers.
(I guess it’s possible they left out an ‘objectionable’ scene or two, but they certainly left in enough things more shocking than “penis”.)
I’m really disappointed! One of the things I found wonderfully impressive (and amusing) about that song was that mangages to be rather explict and wasn’t censored at all around here (central and eastern PA).
(Yes, we get the gun-less version of Teenage Dirtbag.)
No kidding? Either I’m not remembering it, or I saw a different version. But the last time I saw it was years ago, shortly after the song was released, so it’s most likely faulty memory on my part.
I hate listening to Rick Dees Top 40, because it edits songs so needlessly. I wouldn’t listen to it, but sometimes on weekend trips, the only sounds are his…
Nelly: Country Grammar - He cuts out like 3 lines, which could be objectionable, but the way they do it totally disrupts the flow. It sucks.
Shaggy’s It Wasn’t me: I’ve heard this 3 ways:
First way the chorus was
Picture this we were both caught making love on the bathroom floor.
Second way: (Dees crap)
Picture this we were both wearing aprons mopping the bathroom floor.
Third way: (Dallas pop Radio)
Picture this we were both buck naked banging on the bathroom floor.
Who’s idea was it to leave the mic live on the field in the opening of the SuperBowl? Hmm…
Also, I’ve said it before, but that Dixie Chicks ‘Earl had to die’ song is a bit much for me. They banned ‘Thunder Rolls’ because she got hit and he got killed, but it’s okay to poison some abuser… ugh.
Rick Dees is the worst. I hate it. I agree that ya shouldn’t say bad words on the radio, but in the same context, let’s not ruin the artist’s intentions…
