Finder keeps screwing up. It will only allow for a search by file name. Also, the “+” will not appear, allowing for searches by different criteria.

Interestingly, Spotlight will allow me to search based on criteria.

Now, I _can_ fix this problem by repairing permissions (keep in mind this is a brand new MacBook Pro about a month old). Here is what I see:

Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .

Repaired “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”

Permissions differ on “usr/lib/ruby”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .

Repaired “usr/lib/ruby”

All is well and good–for ONE use of Finder. Then it goes back to its old state, and I have to repair permissions again–and get the exact same thing above.

I’ve tried to search online to find the origin of this bug but can’t. Perhaps the SDMB geniuses can help. Thank you!

I seriously doubt that Finder uses either Java or Ruby, so those errors must be a Red Herring.
Try a different user, and see what happens.

Yet the permissions repair fixes it every time. Without permissions repair, it remains unfixed. I read in one place online that “events,” although unrelated, can cause Finder to jam.

Well, first a little background: the “l” stands for “symbolic link,” and indicates that your OS expects an alias, but is seeing a directory. According to my system, there should not be a directory in either of those locations. I’d guess that either some application or boot setting is re-setting the file type to “d,” or you actually have a directory there, and what I’ve found on the internet suggests that duplicates can indeed cause problems. You might consider the following:

1. Search for the following to verify that these directories are in their proper locations:

/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby

/System/Library/Java/Support/CoreDeploy.bundle/Contents/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

1. Back up the living hell out of your system. Make sure you’ve got your install disk.

3a) Delete the offending directories (the ones in your post, NOT the ones above). The OS ought to make new aliases and put them in the proper locations.

3b) Make an alias for the correct directory and overwrite the offending directory with it.

I don’t know if Finder will let you do this; you may need to boot from the install disk, and/or do it in Terminal. Since I’m sure as hell not trying this on MY perfectly functioning MacBook Pro, it may be ineffective or disabling. IANACE. YMMV. Void without purchase. I can back up my system with Time Machine, but I don’t have an install disc. This MacBook Pro has no optical drive. Not even sure how I’d do a reinstall.

The ones in your OP:
Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
and
usr/lib/ruby

Oh, the Retina model, eh? Hold down Command-R during restart, and a bunch of disk utilities will come up, including the recovery partition. Before you do that, make sure you can also reinstall your applications. It’s the nuclear option.

If you set up a new user account, does it do the same thing in that account?

If not, it’s probably a corrupted preference file. If so, a reinstall of OSX may be in order after a backup?

I don’t think those errors have anything to do with your problem (they are being generated by the Dock, and the WindowServer process). See if there are other errors generated by the Finder.

Now Finder is working again. It truly seems like Java is messing it up. I do not see any error messages that specifically say “Finder.” It is all kernel, mdworker, sandboxd, dock, WindowServer. Any of those count?

i’ve taken my macbookpro10,1 retina to the genius bar almost 10 times in the past year! they simply have not been able to fix it. for some reason they tried replacing the logic board TWICE. The Audio Board once. Also, they replaced the following parts the last time I took it in. “Cable, Flex, I/O,” “Cable, I/O, Right,” and the left and right fans!

Anyway, the problem is not resolved. Every time I run disk utility after using any application I get:

Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .
Group differs on “Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.

The disk utility repairs it every time but the problem always returns

Has anyone found a solution to this??

I have also tried countless troubleshooting methods including:

Reinstalling Mountain Lion
Tried almost all combinations of java settings
Creating a new user account
Deleting my old Windows Virtual machines on VMware Fusion
and many more.

Any suggestions?
