# Weird thing caught on porch camera

Any thoughts about what this might be? I don’t think it’s a bird. Maybe a ginormous moth? The flight pattern is so erratic. Please tell me it’s not a bat.

I didn’t want a bat. I woke up in my house in the country one morning and there was a bat flying around the room. I had to get rabies shots just in case.
Ok. A moth. Good.
Gee, the bat that brings that baby home is going to feed the family for a couple of days.

I’ve never seen one around a porch light though, just getting nectar from and pollinating certain flowers around dusk. They look at first glance like hummingbirds.

I sometimes see moths like that during the day. They are called hummingbird moths out this way and I think they are way cool.

When I was a kid, I had a large insect collection. My largest moth had a wingspan of about five inches. There are actually moths with wingspans of over ten inches.
