Butt also is a common German last name. There’s Hans Jörg Butt for instance, a former goalkeeper for the German national football team:

> **[Hans-Jörg Butt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans-J%C3%B6rg_Butt)**
>
> Hans-Jörg Butt (German pronunciation: \[hans ˈjœʁk ˈbʊt\]; born 28 May 1974) is a German former footballer who played as a goalkeeper.
> Known for taking penalty kicks, and for often running into the opposing penalty box in an attempt to find a winner whenever his team were trailing, he scored 26 goals in the Bundesliga. He played for Hamburger SV, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in his country, having arrived at Munich already aged 34.

Reminds me of when we had two Carls (or Karls) in our smallish (maybe 12 people?) workgroup. One was Carl, and the other was Karl, so they were always referred to as C-Carl or K-Karl.

When my dad’s house was up for sale, I came in one afternoon to find a heap of business cards left on the dining room table by the various real estate agents who had shown it. The one that caught my eye was, I shit you not, Rainey Tarpey.

I was on jury duty a while back, and the woman running the show was telling everyone about the numerous options for lunch in downtown Tacoma. She told us of a pho shop a couple blocks up, but refrained from naming it. Apparently it took its name from the fact that it was on King street.

Early Vinland colonist, **Freydís Eiríksdóttir** , daughter of Erik the Red and sister to Lief Erikson must have lived a colorful life (though she is only mentioned once in _The Saga of the Greenlanders_).

The account tells of a time when natives (Skrælingjar in Icelandic) attacked the expedition camp Freydís was part of during the night. Many of the Nordic invaders fled in fear, but not 8-month pregnant Freydís. She yelled, _“Why run you away from such worthless creatures, stout men that ye are, when, as seems to me likely, you might slaughter them like so many cattle? Let me but have a weapon, I know I could fight better than any of you.”_

Freydís retrieved the sword of the fallen Thorbrand Snorrisson and attacked the natives. Surrounded by enemies, she undid her garment and beat the sword upon her breast. Seeing this, the natives retreated to their boats in fear and fled.

> Freydís Eiríksdóttir (born c. 970) was a Icelandic woman said to be the daughter of Erik the Red (as in her patronym), who figured prominently in the Norse exploration of North America as an early colonist of Vinland, while her brother, Leif Erikson, is credited in early histories of the region with the first European contact. The medieval and primary sources that mention Freydís are the two Vinland sagas: the Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Erik the Red. The two sagas offer differing ac...
