Yes, but the information Ed gave was not internal, it was for outside customers. I don’t always update outside customers with every delay. Also, I wouldn’t give firm dates to outside customers (and it wasn’t done here) but if customers ask then I would tell them the revised deadline of course. However, if a customer were sincerely interested in knowing the revised deadline, or the latest update, but started out by saying “you’re a liar and I’ll never believe another word you say” I would transfer them to the customer relations department and let them deal with it. That’s why I work with computers instead of people.
What’s the difference between common courtesy and common fucking courtesy?
I think asking for an update is fine. I think saying that the free posting was guaranteed by the end of the July is incorrect. And I think that if you want information from someone, calling the person a liar as part of your question is unproductive.
Now we shall return you to the Pit thread in progress.
Ah, different issues, I am not here to pit Ed Zotti, I am here expressing hope that he or CL will gives an update soon or better yet actually implement the changes.
I challenged your post as it seemed to be dismissing the fact that while deadlines are often missed, status updates are standard. Even Microsoft seems to understand this simple concept. IBM will flood you with details and new dates.
We got basically nothing as far as updates here at the dope and every ATMB thread is met with, “We know nothing.” You have to admit that can get a little frustrating. Additionally we had many valued posters choose not to renew and they are still missing and that actually diminishes the value of the board. The one I notice most is **Ellis Dee ** as he should me providing me with a lot of free research about the **Giants ** and the NFC East now. However, there are plenty more posters missing.
Well, it didn’t start with that. That came from experience dealing with what you call “customer service” which we all know does not exist on this board.
Okay, that’s not totally fair. You can change your screename once and sponsor someone else’s membership.
People didn’t start calling the PTB liars until they demonstrated a propensity for lying.
Yes, but if people like you keep complaining about it all the time they won’t give us any more dates. If we have no dates then we won’t know when free posting isn’t going to start.
I have to ask, what is the point of staying around here any more? We pay money to be treated like shit, with crappy software, broken promises and a stagnating user base. We’d be as well creating our own spin-off forum, pretty much a clone of this, but with up-to-date software and admins who give a fuck (no, I’m not describing the `cult of personality’/'geography specific spin-offs that already exist).
I don’t think it is that simple. This board is still diverse and pretty large. Additionally is still gets people coming in from the Straight Dope home page. What percentage of active posters could you even get to migrate as a group to a new board? If this board gets shut down, people will drift away to miscellaneous boards. I’m sure Opal would get a quick infusion and there will probably be 18 other boards set up real quick, but I imagine it would be tough to get a large enough portion of the board to move somewhere together to make the effort worthwhile.
Personally I am still an optimist and hope we can encourage the owners of the SDMB to do right buy and improve and grow it instead of letting it wilt on the vine.
Nah, it just occurred to me today that the announcement specified “June or July”. Like I said, there were caveats, but if there is no intention on following through it might well have said 2025, and probably would have been more honest.
It is to some. Haven’t you noticed the decline in active membership? But hey, if it gets any smaller all the problems will magically go away. It’s hard to overload a server with 5 users, you know what I mean?
This. And if I hear, “we have no way of knowing” again, I will either scream, or apply for a job at the Chicago Reader. Because I’ve always wanted a job where I didn’t have to go to meetings.
We got this same crap at work. “The new webserver will be ready in March.” “Well, they’re working on it. Probably May.” “Okay, we’re set! June 10!” “…Why are you asking me about it? sigh They need a couple more weeks.” “Okay! We’re ready! Use the new webs- …okay, that’s a critical failure.” “STOP ASKING ME WHEN IT’S COMING”
And when the new webserver finally was unveiled for use, literally a year and a half after we were told it would be working, it was a complete POS. Complaining to management about it just resulting in getting yelled at, because they invested too much money to back out and go with a competent web team.
