# Welcome, IL, to the 21st Century

Yesterday afternoon the Illinois Senate, after a decade of obstruction, passed a civil rights bill protecting Illinoisians on the basis of [sexual orientation](http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/01/011105Illinois.htm). The House, which has passed it several times only for the Senate to kill it, also passed it and the governor has pledged to sign it. This makes Illinois the 15th state which will protect its citizens from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
