We’re down to our last three jars of peaches, so are looking forward to peach season also. Also, fresh and flavorful melons of all stripe, marionberries, and all the other wonderful local fruits and veggies.

> I’m with you guys. And you know, it really isn’t about the heat…it’s the cursed humidity that permeates so much of the continental US during the Summer months.

Isn’t the humidity the reason Europeans considered the North American climate toxic for so long?

I remember reading _Martin Chuzzlewit_, where the lead character moved to an area somewhere in the midwestern interior to join a group of pioneers who immediately started dying from the noxious humid fumes and “bad air.”

The state of Texas couldn’t exist without modern air conditioning.

Tell that to Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, etc.

What air conditioning has actually done for hot climates is wipe out the traditional forms of architecture and building materials – forms that allowed people to live in the heat in relative comfort.

Ain’t no amount of adobe could convince me to live in Texas.

What I meant was, to current POPULATION of Texas. You could always find a few dozen hardy souls and masochists to go down there without AC, I guess.

All that and more, for sure. I’m down to my final quart of tomatoes! I try to put up 50 quarts a year of those alone. I need to dehydrate a bunch this year, too.

Looks like the pear tree is going to have a banner year of production, and the apples always go crazy. I usually dehydrate them. I moan while I’m doing all the prep, but they sure are marvelous in granola for the rest of the year.

And yes, the berries… strawberries, red raspberries, black caps, blueberries, marionberries and blackberries. Mmmmm! I’ll be doing a lot of picking.

Ok, maybe I don’t mind summer so much. 😉

Really, we have little to complain about for summer in the PNW compared to so many other places. Rare humidity, and the super hot days of the over-100F variety total maybe half a dozen a season, if that. But this never stopped me from bitching about it.

Let’s hope for a wonderful peach season.

You know how SAD sufferers use lightboxes for winter depression? I’m going to invent a miniature in-home biodome. It will be below freezing inside and snow will come down from the ceiling when the user wants to have a private blizzard.

My people! I hate summer. Always have, even as a kid. There is in fact, a reverse SAD which affects people like us. Very little has been written about it in the medical literature, which being a hospital liberrian, I have searched. Time to shut the windows, pull down the blinds, and set the a/c to “meat locker.”

Ski season is over. Summer blows. Too hot, the dogs don’t wanna run, the Jeep runs hot (did a total Ghetto Mod and cut out two huge chunks of hood and put soffit vents over them).

Good BBQ weather, though. And I like to grow tomatoes and beans, so there’s that, I guess. And Bats!

A Fellow Wasteland Car Surgeon!

Hell I have cut pieces of Rubber Wall Base/Molding (cut the lip of it off) on some unsightly stuff on my car with some mounting tape… Did bondo and there was still a gap/somewhere I couldn’t bondo)… you gotta do what you gotta do, cheaply. Soffit vents are actually a really good idea, with or without a hood scoop. I might do that one day once the engine and transmission start to outlive the body some more.

I had a busted taillight. So I went to the junkyard and busted out a bigger piece than mine had missing.

Cut, File, Grind, Sand then Glue and Epoxy the errors. An hour later, you can’t tell where the repair was made. 😉 \*Well, not quite up to **The Rocketeer** level of Freakin’ Awesome, but pretty good.

Did this on the same day as the Ghetto Vents, by the way.

Okay, back to hating on Summer!

I can get behind this rant because I am a spring/fall person 😉

Our “spring” went winter---- summer.

I like snuggling under blankies or next to hubby …or as close as I can get with 3 dogs.

I hate waking up at 6 am when I have 45 more minutes to get up… and it’s too hot to wear a stocking hat to roll down over my eyes.

It’s also too hot too wear my winter pjs… and yet still too cold over the night to wear my summer pjs. Another 5 years or so and I can sleep nekkid like my husband does all of the time because by then all the kids will have moved out. Boys don’t want to see mom sweating like an Iowa Sow let alone… nekkid.

I bought a beekeeper suit for when mosquito season hits. (For outside… if they get inside beyond one or two… I will scream.)

Spring is my favourite time of year. Summer is my next favourite. Yes, heat can be oppressive and uncomfortable but I hate the cold. I lived with it until I was 30, until I moved to Australia, and now winter can bugger off and die.

_(Melbourne still gets cold, but not as bad as where I came from)_

I’ll need youse guys to come out next week to open the hood on my old 530. For the second time in four years her hood latch/cable is broken. My friend is going to drive her at the HPDE we’re going to on May 20. and I gotta change the fluids. I’m on the verge of doing a ghetto fix.

I’m sympathetic with the OP, but even with my mixed feelings about summer, I’m not in the haters category. The older I get, the less I like hot days baking in the sun. I hate having to slather sunscreen on by 9:00 in the morning.

But… I really like the longer daylight hours, especially as it gets light earlier in the morning. I’m definitely a morning person. Plus, we don’t really get too many overly hot days where I live and we get even fewer hot nights. It’s a rare night when I can’t open my windows before going to bed and just let the cool night air keep things comfortable. And I’m over on the coast every weekend, where a high of 75 deg is considered a warm day.

I might be much more closely aligned withe the full-on summer haters if I still lived in Boston, but here in CA, the summers are still pretty nice even for folks who prefer cooler weather. We have a few heat waves, sure, but generally the highs are around 85, which ain’t bad at all.

Having said all that, don’t move here. You’ll hate it. The economy is booming; we have about as diverse a population as you’ll find anywhere in the country, and people are super liberal. You will defiantly hate it. 😃

I did not turn the heater on last winter, not once. In fact, the window by my bed has been open 6 inches since June. But then, we only have 2 seasons here, Summer and Almostsummer.

</div>

Being on the opposite side of this divide, I thought I’d ask:

Don’t summer-haters have a lot more options than winter-haters?

**Where can you move if you hate 90+ humid summers?** Anywhere in the midwest (cold / snow 6+ months of the year), most of the west coast SF and above, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Britain, Scotland, Ireland, most of the Eastern European countries, you name it.

A lot of those options are US or European with good or decent economies, and the non-US ones are even better socially than the US if you’re in the liberal demographic majority characterizing most SDMB posters (i.e. Canada and the Nordic States, those liberal paradises that are bastions of sensible politicians, humanitarian rights, and functional healthcare and education systems).

**Where can you move if you hate winter and never want to see snow or temperatures below 60?** Hawaii, Florida, Southern California, Greece, Mexico, Central and South America, and a bunch of tropical or semi-tropical islands generally characterized by high prices coupled with weak economies.

A lot of those winter-hating options (save Socal) are crappy economically, most are overpriced or unstable, and most are not really in the same league politically and socially as the bastions of enlightenment you see in the “hates summer” list.

So summer-haters rejoice! You have more and better choices in terms of relocating to your preferred climate, and we winter-haters can only envy you from afar. 🙂
