I spent the weekend away on a float trip for my sister’s bachelorette party and left little one with the person who has her and her brother. Her other sister passed away Thursday night, but Simone and her brother were doing well. Saturday morning, I got a call telling me Simone had died overnight and her brother was not doing well and it seemed likely it was just a matter of time for him. I haven’t heard since how he’s doing (I just got home about an hour ago) but will check tomorrow when I get to work. Man, it was a valiant effort, both on our part and on theirs. It was amazing how alert she was all the time, even when she was operating entirely by smell and touch. Her favorite place to sleep was on my chest or cupped in my hands. I hope she thought her life was good. I hope she understands on some level how much she was loved. I hate that I wasn’t there to hold her in the end. People always say when a mother dog rejects her puppies that maybe she knew something wasn’t right with them. But with babies this small, it isn’t like you usually get MRIs and ECGs and so forth to see (nor do you usually have time once they go downhill)- it always just ends up being kind of a vague guess as to why they didn’t make it. I wonder if the mama dogs really do “know” or if it’s just that it’s SO hard to keep puppies alive from birth and the odds are just so lousy that it’s not uncommon to lose entire litters this way. My own dog will be getting some extra treats today. And yours can have some, too. Tell them I said so. They’re for Simone. ---
