Pssst. Don’t tell anybody. Because there were nearly as many conspiracy theories (there still are a few) about the _Maine_ as there are about the WTC.
Of course, those of us in the know don’t think it’s mere coincidence that the _Maine_ incident occurred so near GITMO, which became so important after the WTC attack. It’s all connected.

Maybe.
The pivotal event of my young adulthood was when the Challenger blew up. For people older than me it was when Kennedy got shot.
I remember where I was when I heard about the Challenger. I remember the shock and horror - but its distant. Its not real, its a memory of a memory now.
9/11 is also getting there - a memory of a memory.

I remember seeing the Challenger explosion live, but it was only within the last year that I happened to see footage of the teacher’s parents watching, as they realized what had happened, and what that meant. That was much more sad because I hadn’t really put the survivors’ faces to it.
9/11 was all about hearing from my brother (he was headed to work at WTC 7) who got home and called before the phones went down. I glom it in with the other big events he’s been through. I have never watched all the footage; they were showing it at the auditoria at work but I stayed by the phone in my office to hear from my brother and never looked at the TV coverage.

Anyone remember that episode of “Reno 911!” when the (supposed) Homeland Security guy was visiting? Dangle and I think Jones were cruising around, and Dangle sees a bumper sticker. Paraphrased: “‘United We Stand’…They’re not fooling anyone. The next terrorists are gonna have a big ol’ SUV, with ‘United We Stand’ on it, or ‘These Colors Don’t Run’…and a Toby Keith CD playin’.”

Always remembering 9/11 speaks of my 343 brothers in FDNY who never came home to their families that day. Every year we bury ~ 100 career and volunteer firefighters (unofficially 105 for 2006, according to the USFA), and most folks don’t give a shit, because it doesn’t impact their lives.

I’m not saying to forget 9/11 – my question was, what are you trying to communicate by having a bumper sticker saying “we will always remember 9/11” on your SUV? If the person’s point is to remember firefighters who gave their lives, wouldn’t it be a more effective communication to say so directly?
