I’m listening to NPR as I type this, and it seems that one after another of the contested states is going for Bush. Four more years of a goatfelching drugstore cowboy to represent my country in the world. Four more years of a futile, expensive war on the other side of the world. Four more years of having to carry a burden of embarrassment on my back for being an American, in any international setting (which I consider the SDMB to be). Given a rich candidate who doesn’t try to hide his heritage vs. a rich candidate who has a cultivated Texas accent to appear down with Rural America, I’ll take the first rich guy every time. And I’d rather have someone who is down with Urban America because that’s where most of us live and the environment with which most of us contend, even if we think of ourselves as suburbanites. I thought that knowing what we know now, most people would have become so fed up that they would have gone for Kerry in droves. Back when I believed that the Iraqis would shower our parade route with roses, I too was for the war. But the intelligence that suggested that, not to mention the existence of stockpiled WMDs, was flawed beyond all recognition. And I believe that some of the actions arising from that war, like removing Saddam, were correct when considered as individual, isolated acts, but we shouldn’t have been there in the first place. I’m scratching my head as to why we did it, now. Especially when there was so much still to be done in other countries, like, you know, AFGHANISTAN. Next!! ---

What battleground states has NPR given to Bush? Nothing I’ve seen or heard has called any of them. ---

Well, the polling places are really swingin’ out here in the swing state of Ohio. Voter turnout’s incredibly high. As of a few minutes ago, there were (probably still are) people still waiting on line to vote. A lot of those people are voting for the first time in their lives because they want Bush the hell out of office. My guess is that there won’t be much meaningful data for Ohio until at least 9:30 Eastern time or so. That might be true for a lot of other states as well. And, of course, results from states in the Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones may not come in until after that. ---

I’m watching NBC, and they just announced that as opposed to forcing people to stand in line for hours in Ohio, polls workers are handing out paper ballots. The rep said that a federal judge has allowed it, better they cast a paper vote than leave and not vote at all. Keep the faith, people. Whatever the tally, add 55 to Kerry’s total; there’s no way California’s going to that squinty putz. ---

There’s no question that Kerry gets California. That’s a no-brainer. However, consulting the Yahoo map (not perhaps the best source), Bush is doing well in Florida and he’s gaining in Ohio (though he’s still behind). Too soon to tell, though. Too soon to tell. The night is young. ---

Well, someone’s already filed a lawsuit in Cincinnati, OH over how votes are being counted. And as I’m typing this, NPRs reporting more and more lawsuits in Ohio, so it looks like Ohio is turning into this election’s Florida ---

I absolutely despise people who are saying shit like this already. Polls are still open on the east fucking coast! Chill the fuck out and wait at least a couple hours before screaming/bitching/whining/moaning/etc about how Bush/Kerry is going to win and you want to kill yourself because of it. ---
