It refers to the practice of removing the ashes and clinkers from a coal-burning furnace. I suppose it could also refer to removing ashes from a wood-burning stove, but the context I learned it was in regard to coal-burning home furnaces: that was always “Father’s little chore”, to go down-cellar once a day, sift down the grate, and remove the ashes and clinkers. ---

Holy shit! I just heard on the news that the fucker had _worked at the little girls school!_ He was hired by a contractor to be a mason’s assistant at construction done at the school.
