Now you can count me among the ones in this thread who have watched Gandhi.
Fun fact: I’ve, uh, been mis-pronouncing his last name my entire life. :o
Fortunately, the name “Gandhi” isn’t one that comes up in everyday conversation.

Exactly. I found the rest unpleasant, without being engaging.
+1. Although, for me, it was about 10 years ago when I first saw Citizen Kane. Same with The Godfather. Didn’t get around to it until about 2 or 3 years ago. There’s no better way to phrase it other than it fucking blew me away.
After someone here mentioned Omar Sharif coming out of a mirage from Lawrence of Arabia, I wanted to look it up on Youtube. Unfortunately, I didn’t see it there, but I saw some clips that made me get out and rent to watch it.
I feel so priviledged to have watched this. and wow on its 50th anniversary
Here were some high scenes: (Highlight the Spoilers below)
Ali/Omar from the mirage, just the suspense.
Then his shooting Lawrence’s traveling bud in the head. WOW
Alec/Prince Feisal’s defeated look in the intro scene and then looking up at Lawrence.
The majestic yumminess of Omar and Peter. Dayum!
There’s a Youtube clip of the movie’s best edit scene. ITA with the Youtube uploader. And of Lawrence mentioning his family background to Ali.
That’s exactly the scene that the finest BluRay 1080P video system is inadequate to convey. We were able to see a 70mm print at Chicago’s Music Box theater, and this tiny little dot getting bigger and bigger…
I always sort of meant to watch Birth of a Nation, Babette’s Feast, The Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, and The Great Dictator but never did and now watching them doesn’t sound like much fun. Would like to watch the original Dawn of the Dead, though, if I came across it when I was in the right mood.
If that’s true, I apologize to TCM. I honestly don’t remember whether the version I saw was the director’s cut, but I guess it could have been.
That scene’s not in the theatrical cut, nor is it on the first-release DVD (I checked earlier.)
Oh man, I absolutely ADORE Babette’s Feast. It’s a slow build of a story, but oh so good.
Metropolis is amazing, especially in its special effects (for its time, that is.) I’ve got it queued up on Netflix Instant.
I got to see Metropolis on the big screen at a revival theatre in the 80’s. Very nice to see it large-scale like that, except for the moron in front of me who kept laughing at the acting style.
Since I learned to spin cotton on the charkha, I’ve wanted to re-watch Gandhi for that scene where Ben Kingsley spins. He actually learned to spin at least a little for that role.
Just watched the director’s cut of Amadeus, and that scene is indeed there.
I highly recommend it.
I’ll be in my bunk.
I have now watched Kramer vs. Kramer, also.
Wow. I was really not expecting that movie to have full frontal nudity.
Just saw The Grapes of Wrath this weekend. It was a bit different from what I expected, but very good. I’m hoping it was fairly true to the book, because I’ve read a lot of Steinbeck and I doubt I’ll get back to reading that one.
It was the 70s. All movies had full frontal nudity. Even Disney cartoons.
Not even Herbie was dressed!
Yeah, and he had a banana.
Oh, thanks for ruining it for me.
Every time I read about the foibles and failings of some historical figure I wonder what Jesus and Buddha were like and maybe Paul, and also about our apparent need to make our heroes much better than they actually were.
Dammit. That means my copy of Silver Streak has been bowdlerized!
Don’t worry about it. I owned a laser-disk copy of Silver Streak: Uncensored! and all the full-frontal was Gene Wilder and Ned Beatty in a totally out-of-nowhere love scene and I gotta tell you: It’s not as hot as it sounds. Trust me on this.
It’s probably almost as bad as the scene from Three Days of the Condor with Redford and von Sydow.
Another scene TCM cut out!
