> Well, in attempting to find an authoritative link I typed “Chrysler 3.8” into google and it auto-filled “Chrysler 3.8 burning oil” if that tells you anything…

so, in other words, no you don’t have a cite.

Google auto-fill doesn’t count as a cite, now? What is this world coming to?

In other words just typing “chrysler 3.8” into google will get you pages and pages of people complaining about oil consumption in higher mileage examples of these engines. Sure every engine turns into an oil-burner now and again but when those things come up on the first page (and when it’s the first auto-fill result) it’s a pretty good bet that it is indeed a common problem.

this is weak sauce. the Google search suggestions you see are tailored to your search and web browsing history; they’re not the same for everybody. the first entry _I_ get when typing “Chrysler 3.8” is “Chrysler 3.8 engine diagram.” yes, oil burning was in the list but it was a few down and the only one.

the other funny thing is that when I type “Chrysler 3.3” none of the suggested entries have anything to do with oil burning, and the 3.3 and 3.8 were practically the same damn engine.

neither the 3.3 nor the 3.8 were particularly known for consuming oil. Yes, I’m sure some did, and considering millions of these were made from 1989 to 2010, I’m sure raw numbers would support that there are enough out there consuming oil where people will be searching for that on google. The engine used in Chrysler minivans which _was_ known for burning oil was the 3.0 liter they bought from Mitsubishi. It had shit valve guides and any engine was pretty much guaranteed to start puffing blue smoke by the time it had 80,000 miles on it.

I’d be suspicious of a 4 wheel drive that _didn’t_ leak oil.

Well, the problem is that short of a recall-level issue there’s nobody who keeps track of these things; or at least nobody who does and publishes it. So if you say “cite” what exactly are you expecting? No argument about the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6’s problems, but if I asked you for a cite for it what would you come up with? That didn’t generate a recall or any TSB’s either. Just linking to individual forum posts and such doesn’t really tell you much because, yes, every engine has an oil-burner here and there. I _thought_ the large amount of discussion about the 3.8L oil consumption issue that comes up in early search results would at least give you the general idea that this is a problem specific to this engine. Or at least that _I_ didn’t make it up. If you don’t agree, I guess we’ll just have to disagree. But you’re also disagreeing with a large portion of the Jeep enthusiast community.

Oh, and with the 3.3’s, the general speculation in the Jeep community is that the problem with the 3.8 is a QC issue (possibly coincident with Chrysler moving production of the engine to Mexico) and/or associated with the harder use they see in the Jeep application. So not a design flaw with the engine, hence why the 3.3’s were generally okay. Although consumption problems with minivans with the 3.8 don’t seem too unusual either.

I’m also expecting the OP to come back any minute and say “Naaaah, it’s a Patriot” or something, thus making the whole 3.8 engine tangent completely irrelevant.

Naaah. It’s a Patriot.
Swear to God.
