I am still stuck with FB Messenger for my far-flung friends, but that’s maybe ten people at most, and people I exclusively love. I have a Messenger group composed of me and my four best friends, Junior high thru college. We chat daily and I would never want to let go of that. ---

I have never used Facebook but right now have a dear friend in another state who’s ill, and all the updates about her condition are being done on Facebook. Is it possible to treat FB like a blog, that is just read posts by people I want to read, when I want to read them, not “following” anyone and not posting anything of my own except maybe remarks on the posts I read? ---

Reading post by people you want to read is following them. You send them a friend request and if they accept it their posts will show up on your feed. You can also visit their page when you want. If there is a group centered around your friend and her illness you can join that. You can friend as many or as few people as you want, and you’re under no obligation to post yourself. Hope your friend gets better. ---

And one more question; I tried to find this out on the FB site but failed. If I sign up does this mean that anyone who searches on my name will find out I am there? And can I set something so they won’t? Or, can I sign up with a fake name? ---

Don’t make it too outlandish and you’ll be fine. Of course people trying to friend you will have a hard time finding you, and if you send a request the recipient might not know who you are and ignore it. Honestly it’s very user-friendly and intuitive, with lots of help buttons. Facebook wants people to use it and not get too frustrated. And if you don’t like your experience you can always delete your account. I would just sign up and you’ll find most of your questions answer themselves. ETA: But yes, people who search your user name will find your page. ---

If your name is more common, you can avoid putting any personal information in your profile that a searcher would see, including no photo, and they won’t be able to tell if it’s you or someone with the same name. You can also use a nickname to throw them off further. If someone requests to Friend you, you can just decline if you want, and they won’t be able to see any more about you. Then make sure your post settings are such that only Friends can see your posts and responses, and you should be OK. My Friend list is very short, and even among those I have had to un-follow three people whose posts I can’t deal with. Therefore, no drama, no conflict. ---

Thanks everyone for the help. I do have a very uncommon name and no desire for contacts, just information, so I appreciate the suggestions for achieving this. Now I’ll stop with this hijack of the mini-rants, with a tiny rant about sites that won’t let you look at them if you have an ad-blocker. ---

Usually just changes some variation of this last name. Settings \> General \> Edit your name. “Please note: You won’t be able to change your name within the next 60 days. Make sure not to add any unusual capitalization, punctuation, characters or random words.” So I guess he’s changing it about every two months then. ---
