Well shit, I accidentally bought a *foam* mattress

I heard sex on such a mattress is not so great, no rebound action.

I’ve been sleeping on a 12" memory foam mattress for eight years now - love it. When I first bought it was the first time since I was a kid that I slept straight through the night without tossing and turning - zonk out, wake up eight hours later in the same position. It molds to your body shape - but that comes with some changes from a regular coil mattress. You’ll sink into it a bit - it can get warm in the summer, but you can throw a topper/blanket on it then. It’s not as good for bouncy bouncy bedtime naughty touch time, but really, that’s what the jungle room is for.

You probably bought a perfectly fine mattress. Modern foam mattresses aren’t like those ancient egg crate foam rubber things they made in decades past.

It requires some modification of technique, but not so much that I’d consider it a detriment. As with all such things, personal mileage may vary.

I’ve never been a huge fan. I prefer an aggressively hard matress, and they aren’t a great fit for certain recreational activities.

It just needs a solid surface under it, not a springy one like a box spring. I have the “special board” under my Temperpedic and all it is, is a board cut to the right shape for a queen size bed and covered in some stapled-down upholstery fabric. If you have a platform bed you don’t need anything. If not, go to Home Depot and get a couple of pieces 3/4" plywood cut to shape, lay them on top of the box spring.

Anyhow we have the cheapest TempurPedic they make and its a very comfy bed.

We got a foam mattress from Amazon several years ago. Different brand. We’re perfectly happy with it.

Sometimes there’s a goof in the manufacturing process and you’ll get one that is heavy on the volatile compounds smell. But that’s not the norm. Almost all are fine after a couple days of airing out.

It was okay for the most part, and I see what you guys mean about the lack of aches while laying in it. But we constantly felt like we were going to roll off the thing–the sides, when compressed by our weight, seemed to slope quite severely. Is this something any of you experienced?

No, but it might be caused by not being on a stable platform.

Can I ask why you bought a mattress for yourself that you didn’t try first? I can see buying a cheap mattress for a guest bedroom without trying it… But a mattress I would probably use every night for the next decade? I would definitely buy from a store.

I bought my mattress online. I knew what I was looking for, and found it.

I think it’s actually fairly difficult to “try” a mattress in any real way, just from buying it at a store.

I bought a foam one a few months ago and had to return it. It was great for my back but way too hot. I poured sweat everywhere I was touching it.

You do get to actually feel it before buying it. Sure, it isn’t trying it out for a full night’s sleep, but you do get to see how firm or soft it is. How did you know what you were looking for?

Like basketball or the floor is lava?

I love that game, need to play it again soon.

To make this clear I mean the floor is lava, much more advances then basketball and lots more fun.

Yeah, I’ve got the same reservation, even though I know people both IRL and online who’ve had terrific success buying a mattress from Amazon. My husband and I have such vastly different mattress requirements that I wouldn’t dream of purchasing one without him being there to try it out.

To answer the “why online?” question, I was given a three hour deadline to secure a mattress, and online was the way to do it in such a time.

My wife and I gave up on both liking the same mattress long, long ago, anyway.

I sleep on a foam mattress on a bed spring base. I’ve modified the setup 2 ways:
There’s a board under the mattress to keep it firmer. Actually a series of slats at short intervals. I got this from IKEA - the slats are roped together and are intended to be the base of some sort of bed. It was inexpensive and works as well as a board without being so unwieldy.
There’s a cotton mattress pad on top to keep me from sinking too far into it or getting too hot. I added this after the first couple of nights because I found it hard to roll over (I roll over a lot) and too warm.
It works very well for me.
