Well. We're moving.

Ah well the landlord living right there makes that a no-go. I’ve lived in plenty of rentals where after I signed the lease, the only contact I had with the landlord was over the phone, and they’d have not known if I had elephants on the roof, let alone cats in the house.

If I still lived in St. Louis, I’d drive over and get them and foster them for you until you were back in a place you could keep them. :frowning:

Have you asked the landlord for a short-term stay for the kitties yet? Or if an extra deposit would let them stay?

I am sorry to hear of your bad luck! Here’s a hope that 2009 is better (for all of us!)

Sending lucky thoughts your way.

You are richer than money, my friend.

Wishing you a winning lottery ticket.

Oh (wo)man, that sucks. If there’s any way I could help, I’ll gladly join the others here.

Have you tried Craigslist for a temporaly home for your kittens? “Wanted: kind cat lover to temporarily house two adorable kitties, victims of the financial crisis”.

On the other hand, there’s a big chance that mini-Marli sees this as a big camping adventure. Make sure she does a lot of outside marshmellow roasting!

Living in a trailer isn’t the end of the world. It’s unfortunate that everybody in one is always put down without any regret by people that think they are not being an asshole bigot. I think we can blame people like Jeff Foxworthy for the increase in this attitude. The majority of trailer dwellers are normal nice people not 8th generation inbreeds. You’ll get through this and like you said you are walking away with belongings and will sleep sheltered at night. It’s too bad that this is happening, but remember your not alone in this. You’re not the first or last that will loose a home to an economic downturn in their life. You will rebuild your life to something better as the months go by. You will persevere and you will enjoy your life again.

I think it would be bad to try and sneak in cats. You could be kicked out, and pets are noticed. Talk to the landlord or find someone to take them a few weeks now so you can work on a better resolution in the future. I’m betting that with the people on this board you may find somebody here that will take your cats for a while.

Well, the landlord is as unbending as some really unbendy thing. And unfortunately I think I’m looking for a permanent home for the kittybrats; we estimate it’s going to take us at least 2 years to get back on our feet enough to even think about looking for a nicer place to rent, and forget owning anything. That’s assuming my husband can find a job anytime soon, and/or I get this big pay raise they’ve been mouthing about for the last 6 months, and we can scrape up enough money to pay the lawyer to get our bankruptcy finalized.

Meanwhile I’m envisioning all the piles of crap in my house that have to be packed up and moved, and wishing I had a wand. I could either zap it all and have it magically appear at the new place, thus saving my back, or I could zap it all and have it magically burst into flames, thus saving my back (and providing a weenie-roast opportunity).

Mini-Marli (aged 10) is a curious cross between Pollyanna and Commander Sam Vimes, and is being an absolute saint about all this (making me feel even guiltier, because I’d like to spoil her rotten and buy her every. blessed. thing on her Christmas wish list, but I can’t and she understands why, which makes me feel even worse). She doesn’t like the idea of moving and losing our pets but she understands it has to be done and might as well be done with a sense of humor. Such a little smart-ass, I don’t know where she gets it from.

Well that sucks. I recommend starting a new thread with a title that calls attention to the fact that you desperately need good homes for you kitties, then link people to this thread for further explanation. Dopers have a reputation for really coming through; ems adopted a kitten we rescued last year, and I know there are several others who have taken in doggies and kitties from other dopers.

Here’s hoping someone comes through for you!

Sorry to hear about the house situation. :frowning:

hree bedroom house into a two bedroom trailer is going to be tough. Have you thought about downsizing? I’ve been shedding a LOT of stuff in recent weeks, as I prepare for moving from a 2,200 square foot house (really too much house for a single guy) to a 1,100 square foot apartment halfway across the country.

There’s a lot of semi-expensive things that I know I’ll need for the next time I buy a house, but that’s going to just going to create clutter in my life for the next two-plus years. I’m keeping the lawnmower, but the chainsaw, weed whacker, leaf blower and all that: Craigslist. I know there’s the prevailing mindset on the SDMB that all books are sacred, and that once acquired should never be disposed of, but at 60 cents a pound for the move, I looked through the library, sorted out books that I haven’t read in years and am unlikely to ever need again for reference, and hauled them off to Half Price Books.

I can’t say much about the cats, but I’ve got two dogs, which really limited my options in finding a place to live. Fortunately, my destination city is very dog-friendly, and it was easy finding a place that would take critters larger than a Chihuahua.

That is an excellent idea…and if a Doper takes them I’ll still get to see pictures of them!

It’s obviously because she has been raised right. Kids don’t learn this stuff living in a vacuum.

I wish you the best of luck.
