I’ve seen that footage, from the football game. A young woman’s car was totaled by a large chunk of that meteorite, and even if her insurance hadn’t paid, which it did, a museum paid her more than enough for that meteorite to replace that car. I remember watching a show about UFOs when I was a tween in the late 1970s, and as they showed this, with a voiceover about weather balloons, my dad said, “That’s not a weather balloon.” And he was right; it was an asteroid that probably crossed through the atmosphere at about 40 miles up, and would have taken out a city if it had landed. Nah, it was around the same size as [Chelyabinsk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelyabinsk_meteor) from 10.02 years ago. It would have shattered miles up, scattered at most a few hundred pounds of rocks [over a number of square miles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strewn_field), possibly rattled some windows. ---

Have you seen the NOVA episode about Chelyabinsk? It said that had that asteroid entered the atmosphere at an angle just a few degrees steeper, it would indeed have taken out the city a la Tunguska. Most of the energy burned off during those few seconds when people caught it on their dashcams. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years since that happened! ---
