I’d like to bring the works of Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Can’t choose between the nature scenes (Great Black Woodpecker) or Kalevala scenes (Lemminkainen’s Mother) or the Symposium, featuring a very drunk young Sibelius. See it in person, though - as you Chicagoland Dopers can do at the Art Institute - you discover _why_ it’s a cliche; it’s powerful and original and moving. _Nighthawks_. Same reason. A Winslow Homer, to illustrate how America saw itself; a Turner, to do the same for England; a Watteau for France.
