I’ve been going to Fuddrucker’s since the late '80s, and I’ve never seen red pepper relish, only pickle relish. Shame – it sounds right up my alley. I do love their pico de gallo, though. And when they had a big vat of hot steamy sauerkraut, I used to put some of that on my burger too (along with everything else!)
I do not remember the food at Fuddruker’s. What I do remember is that our work crew would sometimes make our way over to the one in the West Village and play Prince’s Sexy Motherfucker on the jukebox while we ate humongous burgers and drink gigantic frozen margaritas.
Sounds like a great night out to me!
I saw the ad on “OW, MY Balls!”
The last time I found it was at the Fuddrucker’s in Salt Lake City. Coincidentally the site of the wife and my first restaurant meal together. So far as I know, the locations across the street from the Alamo and on the way to the St. Louis airport just have regular relish.
News Flash: The wife just found a Fuddrucker’s at the Ontario Mills Mall (the largest one-story mall west of the Mississippi!). That’s dinner on Monday. Memorial Day and Fuddrucker’s…the perfect fit.
I don’t think the Fudds here in Texas have those. I’ll have to check my next visit.
I like Fuddruckers. If you are ever there and don’t feel like a burger, the sirloin sandwich is pretty good.
As for the question, mine is a little different. I grew up in Mobile, AL, where Krystal is a mainstay. It’s the Southern answer to White Castle.
When I moved to Houston, there were no Krystals. A few years back, a couple opened on the other side of town, but that is so far that they might as well still be in Alabama. Houston is too damn big.
Every now and then, I pull a Harold and Kumar and make the drive two towns over for a few Krystal burgers, but I cannot wait until they build one in my part of town.
I felt the same way about Jack In The Box before it returned national in the 80s.
As for experiencing other fastfood/franchises, I recently tried In N Out and Carls Jrs. for the first time on a trip to SF.
In N Out was very good. Carl’s Jr. was like a well done Sonic or Whataburger.
Hey, buddy! I wish I could ship you some Krystal burgers. I don’t care for them, but I pass one every day on my way home from work.
East of the Mississippi, Carl’s Jr. is called Hardee’s. We don’t have any nearby, but they’ve revamped their menu, image, and everything over the last few years. They used to be the bottom of the barrel as far as fast food went – dry, greasy fried chicken, limp burgers and breakfast sandwiches. Now I hear they have really good, big burgers.
I need to try Whataburger. A friend was just raving about it, and we have one in town that I’ve never been to.
Whataburger is great for fast food. I’m not fond of their fries but their burgers are the best fast food burgers in my opinion. They toast the buns, it makes a difference. It is especially nice that you can get jalapenos and A-1 on anything. A Whataburger with cheese, jalapenos, A-1, and onions - delicious. Their breakfast taquitos are also really good and cheap to boot. The only problem is that they are fast food franchises and the quality and cleanliness of the sitting areas can vary greatly. I’ve found that the comfort and quality of a Whataburger sitting area is directly proportional to the number of old men there, sitting, drinking coffee, and reading the sports pages.
I’ve a Hardee’s right up the street from me. And it’s called Hardees.
OK, then maybe it’s just a West Coast vs. rest of the country split. I heard that Rally’s and Checkers are the same chain, with different names east and west of the Mississippi, so maybe I got mixed up. That happens sometimes.
Go 'way! ‘Batin’!
Joe
I was so happy that we finally got a Krystal’s a few years ago… Krystals w/ no mustard, extra pickles and Chili-Cheese Fries are the BESSSSTTTT think at 3:15 after leaving the bar!
(Disclaimer: I either leave the bar sober (1-2 beers over 2-3 hours), or with someone else driving.)
There is a Chipotle right down I-83 in Hunt Valley at the mall. It’s probably only a 45 minute drive or so. I eat lunch there often.
Lou,
Growing up in Alabama, I was all about the Hardies. They used to have the nastiest, greasiest Chilli Cheese burger.
And their fried steak biscuits and gravy were great.
Great. This thread is killing my diet. This weekend my wife is going out of town and I KNOW I’m headed to the Krystal on the other side of Houston (it is near a top quality comic shop, so maybe I’ll grab some TPBs!)
I had to read this multiple times to convince myself I wasn’t dreaming. It’s an edible burger at Fuddruckers, but to besmirch the Holy name of Five Guys in a comparison is heresy.
Heresy I tell you!
I forgot to add, in my rambling post above, that it cracked me up how Charlie covered up his conversation with Des. One last time…YOU ALL, EVERYBODY!
See what happens when you experience burger-deprivation? It makes you cross-post!
I have breakfast there breakfast there every weekend. Great salad bar too.
Ouch. Having two browsers open is a bad idea.
Yeah, California seems to have their burgers down pat. You know it’s going to be a good burger joint when you walk in and their are only two food items on the menu: hamburger/cheeseburger and fries (both freshly made, never frozen).
For Midwest chains, I would have to nominate Culver’s as having the best fast-food burger around.
