Nah. I’m a lousy consumer.

Apparently being respectful and well-behaved is now undesirable in children? Is that what you’re saying? That it’s evidence of being a brainwashed little automaton?

What a load of romantic hippie crap!

> After my parents split, my dad married again. My stepmom was a “time-out” person. Her kids were little monsters. They had no respect for my dad, or their mom. They would mouth off to her at every opportunity. My dad was eventually able to get her to spank her kids. You know what? They calmed down pretty fucking quick.

As I said above. If you don’t discipline them properly when they’re little, you get monsters when they’re bigger. And the only way to deal with them then is to hit 'em. But if you train them right from the start, you don’t need to.

The time outs weren’t the problem with your stepmom’s kids. She was clearly a weak authority figure who didn’t train them properly.

Yup, that’s why you leaped in to complain when somebody mentioned that “time-outs” were evidence of the pussification of America … .

Oh, wait, that was me … .

What I’m sick of is people equating spanking with strong parenting and time outs with weak parenting. The mode of punishment you use doesn’t make you a strong or weak parent. What makes you a strong or weak parent is how well you exercise authority over your children. And it’s been my experience that parents who use spanking regularly often do so because they neglected discipline at an early age (i.e. were weak parents) and are now left with no other recourse to handle their unruly brats.

And my daycare provider had a “fanny paddle” she used on her kids, and they were little terrors. Kids can be brats under any discipline system.

Of course not. What you said was that you “did what [you were] told with no ifs, ands, or buts.” I was raised with a healthy dose of skeptism against all authority figures, including my parents.

Now, if that’s “romantic hippie crap,” then hand me my flowers and beads and crank up the Grateful Dead, man! Peace!

I’d like to add to this list a rule in the deli I work at, demanding that an employee must put on three gloves before picking up a bread knife. If we don’t abide by this very well known rule, our customers complain.

You know that he kids who cried were brought with time out style punishment and the ones who did not were spanked as children.

Right.

I wasn’t spanked as a kid. My dad could intimidate me enough. A very good friend of mine was spanked all the time. Hell, his mother took after him with a baseball bat on more than one occasion. He was completly out of controll growing up. He wasn’t afraid of anything. Like taking LSD when he was 11-years old. If he wanted to do something he knew was wrong, he would ask himself if it was worth the beating and nine times out of ten he would do it anyway. Some how he managed to live through his childhood and is now a responsible adult and he doesn’t spank his kids.

I can’t remember who posted it, or what the name of the thread was, but a few weeks ago, there was a thread about a lady who’d written a three (I think) page letter to some newspaper, or authority outlining her “frightening” experience on a flight with several middle eastern “looking” young men.

These supposedly suspicious-looking young arab types had strange looking long flat cases they’d stored as carry on. Furthermore, they _gasp_ congregated in groups by the bathrooms and galleys and actually TALKED and LAUGHED with each other for much of the flight. The nerve of them.

But the most (to her) damning evidence of their obvious terrorist intent (she never actually came out and SAID that, IIRC, in her letter, but the insinuation was there), was that the young man who ended up sitting behind her had been friendly to her in the airport, but gave her a “cold look” when she got up to go to the bathroom and glanced his way.

Okay, that’s the background.

SOOooo, on my trip home from Texas to Alaska, me and my fellow passengers get treated to THIS announcement: (as closely as I can remember)

“Ladies and gentlemen, due to new national security measures, you will no longer be allowed to congregate by the lavatories and galleys. The curtain between the first class and coach has been removed, but NO coach passengers are allowed in this area, nor are they allowed to use the first class lavatory, for (yeah right) YOUR protection and security”.

Damn!!! And I was SO looking forward to the kegger in the First Class lavatory!!!

How many think that this new “security measure” was NOT in response to that idiot woman’s letter?

Heh, You’re keeping me in stitches, **Pochacco**. Thank you for proving my point.

It has less to do with discipline and MORE to do with teaching my son to NOT be a push-over.

You know when the last time my ol’ man spanked me was.

It was when I was about 10 or 11 and he spanked me for something I didn’t think I deserved to be spanked for.

So wht did I do?

I bent over took my licks; then after it was done I got up (with out crying) and told him “With all due respect sir, I think you’re wrong on this one…”

Years later he told me he felt like shit aftewrwords yet at the same time he felt an enormous sense of pride because he KNEW that took some real moxie to say…

**Trunk** , IIRC, you’re not very old. So you wouldn’t remember “back in the day”, before helmets and other protective gear. If you did, you would also remember classmates of yours who became former classmates, because they’d been so gravely injured that they couldn’t attend regular school any more. Or they died.

Then again, even if you were the right age for that, you’d probably exercise the same selective memory so many others do.

**Cat Stevens and Salman Rushdie** :
When the Islamic death sentence against Salman Rushdie was pronounced, Cat Stevens told Muslim students at London’s Kingston Polytechnic, “He must be killed. The Qur’an makes it clear: if someone defames the prophet, he must die.”

This sounds pretty straightforward to me, but of course Cat claims he was misunderstood. How you can misunderstand “he must be killed!” is a bit murky, but he has since clarified that such a death sentence can only be carried out by the authority of a court in an Islamic society ([Horses’s mouth](http://catstevens.com/articles/00013/index.html) ). So I guess that’s alright. He must be killed – but only by an Islamic judge. Idiot!

[Here’s New York Times from 1989](http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/04/18/specials/rushdie-cat.html):

> [@](#):
>
> The musician known as Cat Stevens said in a British television program to be broadcast next week that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ‘‘I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing.’’
>
> He also said that if Mr. Rushdie turned up at his doorstep looking for help, ‘‘I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like.’’

Which also has this little nugget:

> [@](#):
>
> [Dr. Kalim Siddiqui, director of the Muslim Institute in London said] “As a British citizen, I have a duty, if you like, a social contract with the British state, not to break British law. We are not a pacifist religion. We don’t turn the other cheek. We hit back.”

I guess the Religion of Peace bullshit came later huh? Perhaps they’ll switch to Religion of Beheading soon? Maybe Cat Stevens will rename his Peace Train to Peace Planes?

**Cat Stevens on Anti-Semitism:**
[Here’s Daniel Pipes](http://www.danielpipes.org/cair.php)

> [@](#):
>
> It bears noting in this context that CAIR is a foremost sponsor of antisemitism. To cite one example of many, on April 2, 2000, its New York chapter hosted a lecture by Yusuf Islam (the former pop singer who went by the name Cat Stevens). Here is a typical statement by Mr. Islam on the subject of Jews: **“The Jews seem neither to respect God nor His Creation. Their own holy books contain the curse of God brought upon them by their prophets on account of their disobedience to Him and mischief in the earth. We have seen the disrespect for religion displayed by those who consider themselves to be ‘God’s chosen people.’” Yusuf Islam, Eyewitness (Tucson: Islamic Association of Palestine, 1988).**
>
> CAIR also cosponsored a rally at Brooklyn College at which Jews were described as “pigs and monkeys” (The Wall Street Journal, November 3, 2000)

Idiot!

**Cat Stevens and the terrorists.**
[Here’s Rolling Stones (the magasine)](http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/5922705)
Cat said it was all a big misunderstanding, and we know how it is with misunderstandings and Cat Stevens. Idiot!

**Cat Stevens and cuddly mass murders**
[Here’s Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusuf_Islam)
Apparently Cat also expressed his great sympathy for his “Muslem brother” Saddam Hussein. Idiot!

**Cat Stevens and homophobia**

> [@](#):
>

> Yusuf Islam the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, dropped by Londons House of Lords last week to talk about the horrors which are happening more and more in schools"—he cites murders, pregnancies and drugs—and to support the continuation of a government ban on classroom discussion of homosexuality. He also used the occasion to plug his new children’s CD, A Is for Allah, calling it "a syllabus for developing the most sorely lacking quality in young Souls: moral consciousness. "

Support for a government ban on discussion of homosexuality. That should go over like a lead baloon here on SDMB. Idiot!
