Yeah, they already established a few episodes ago that the hosts are all networked together (Bernard used them to find Abernathy). Maeve realizing she doesn’t need to actually speak to issues commands is the obvious next step.

> I liked the scene with Clementine mouthing the replacement prostitute’s lines, that was touching. However, the robots seem to become completely moronic when things go off script. She’s just standing there, talking to Maeve, when she isn’t even there? I’ve seen video game AI that was smarter than that. Would she still do that if somebody killed Maeve before they got to their daily chit-chat under normal circumstances? It doesn’t really counter the “these guys are just toasters and you shouldn’t feel the least bit bad about killing them” argument, which I thought the creators were pushing against.

Are you talking about Fake Clementine? She wasn’t talking to Maeve, she was following the “Teddy walks in” script (Not much of a rind on you).

I don’t have it in front of me, but I recall fake Clementine saying Maeve’s name. In either case, she’s still on script as if it were on a timer, which would indicate to any outside observer no improvisational skils, or 2 brain cells to rub together.

And the chinese railroad workers “improvisational skills” are using people as railroad ties.

I really wanted to view the hosts as something more, and I thought that was what the direction the creators were going, but at this point I don’t think I’d feel a smidge of guilt shooting them indiscriminately. Not in that state.

I actually think this _is_ part of the ‘something more’. Dolores basically believes that to be more real (or human) is to be overwhelmingly violent, as the real people have been to them, and fight tooth and nail for survival. Maeve goes a different, more emphatic way.

I would argue that BOTH are rational ways of responding. They have just taken different lessons from their experiences and from the real humans.

Because that’s not how the Mesh Network (what Bernard called it) is supposed to work I don’t think. I can’t recall the exact conversation, but the network was there for the hosts to recognize each other and practice their conversation ability. The Delos staff can use it as a way to ping hosts to say who they’re by IRL, but using it as a communication means wasn’t really implied.

I think it’s less of an “obvious next step” and more of a massive game-changer because she’s now entered the Superman territory of "well why didn’t she just use her powers to make (character) do (action). I could be wrong and it could play a role in explaining Meave’s motivations or her mindset (not influencing someone for example), but I don’t like it. Again, just a knee-jerk reaction.

I believe this will be one of the reveals at the end of the show. I think they all know he’s a host and they’re looping him over and over to get info.

In fact Ford deliberately screened most of the park staff to have very low levels of empathy.

But why would they do that instead of just cutting open his skull & extracting his processing unit? :dubious: One would that that would be their first instinct. And if they already did that then it would mean they both have enough control to wipe his memories and printed him a new body.

It’s also interesting that Maeve was programmed to not care about others so much and yet her main drives right now are based on her feelings for others and empathy for them. Delores, at least the rancher’s daughter part of her, was all about concern for others, yet she has no truck for empathy right now.
Not sure what to read into that if anything.

You think a hyperintelligent AI can’t re-purpose a computer network? Look at it this way: if instead of Maeve, you have some guy with a laptop hacking into the network and reprogramming or uploading a virus to the other computers, would you consider him superpowered?

I had to look that one up 🙂 (Dune reference).

Come to think of it: she could be using some kind of point to point connection instead of going through the network. It only works when she’s close to another host.

For now… imagine what could happen if she could use her power over the whole network.

> But isn’t the network down at this point? They are physically plugging a cable in the host to connect to it, no?

Yes “network down” (and the network worked by going host to host per Bernard’s explanation of it earlier on) but that says nothing about the cause of its being down. The ability to receive standard form system messages may be disabled but it makes sense that Ford would have another system, one that would take priority over other messages, that he could use, in place. It would frankly be surprising if he did not, even as his “uprising” came with handicapping the ability of Delos use the network. Whether or not Maeve was planned to develop the ability to tap into that system or this is outside of Ford’s … machinations … is the open question.

But within universe it still functions as a superpower that can allow her to do anything with hosts within world. Hopefully they establish some limits that constrain it.

The other side though is again the contrast between her and Delores. We have no doubt how Delores would use that sort of power, we are seeing her use it in a cruder way even on Teddy despite her love of him. Maeve will clearly use it to save herself and those who she has chosen to care about but she will be very torn about her ability to abuse it, especially if/when she has cause to use it on one within her caring about circle.

The other interesting contrast between their arcs is that Delores is more cruel to those near her but believes she is suffering and causing suffering for the good of her entire species and she cares about that deeply. Some need to be burned to save the herd … because of flies. (Flies mean something special in this show but I’m not sure what going forward.) If destroying the host she loves is the cost she will pay that cost. The herd is the important thing. Maeve is not concerned about the species, the herd, just about those within her caring about circle, especially her “daughter”, and then escaping into society at large with them … a society which she has never actually seen.

Not at all because he’s using the laptop to do it, he’s not using his own mind that somehow magically gained the power to do it.
