It seems to me that people are inventing reasons to dislike it.
You’re kidding, right? What is this, some kind of “oh no, we can’t let the riff-raff in” kind of thing? People are seriously objecting to having links to SDMB threads shared with friends and family of other SDMB members. I can’t decide if that’s paranoid, elitist, insane, or what. Maybe all three.
I mean, you seriously are saying that if there is a button that allows people to share links to threads on Facebook with two clicks instead of the current five, you would stomp off in a huff. Awesome.
This place never fails to amaze.
FTFY:
You’re killing independent George!
So instead of friends of people who are established posters joining the community, you prefer that all the new people who find this forum do so when they google craigslist douchbaggery or teflon coated toilet bowls? Net savvy indeed.
Did we ever find out where the Facebook button is? I might just have to join Facebook just so I can use it.
Digg? Does that even exist anymore?
NICE!
I’d like to just add that I agree with everything Martini Enfield has said.
If anyone cares, the problem was on my end.
But I am still wondering how this thing can work with no new JavaScript or special links. Surely I’m missing something.
Hovering over the individual bookmarks shows a url that goes to the relevant services submit page with SDMB parameters. But yes, don’t see how the tracking works.
There was also a brief flirtation with the idea that this board was some kind of business venture that might desire more customers.
That concept was apparently thrown right out the window along with the ‘fighting ignorance’ thing.
The board specific share links were provided by vBulletin. Thus, they contain no tracking information as they use the standard share URLs for Digg, Delicious, and the two others I didn’t remember.
But man, the ludditism in this thread is fucking painful to read. The SDMB is not some special corner of the Internet and Facebook is not the devil. Would you like me to get off your lawn too?
I don’t see how ludditism applies here. Promoting our community to the general internet isn’t a technological issue, but a social one.
More generally, I just get annoyed by the aesthetics. At the end of every page when I’m looking for the next page button, or looking to post, those stand out at me. Since I’m never going to use them it kind of annoys me that you can’t turn them off.
On some other pages, like the main page with the forum views, there are >> and << buttons to shrink/expand sections of the page, and it remembers them. Can we do something like that? Or just add a userCP option to remove the links in general?
Why are people bitching about a facebook button? There isn’t one.
If you’re having visual paroxysms because of where the buttons showed up, they are easily blockable (in Firefox at least) with a third party addon called Remove It Permanently. You can remove them from the entire domain with about 3 clicks.
Board elitists can get stuffed with frog legs for all I care. This is a total non-issue.
A lot of folks in this thread don’t seem to understand how the internet works.
A Facebook “Share” button would not “connect” you to Facebook any more than this link will turn you into a llama.
It will not “make the SDMB like Facebook,” whatever that means. It will not impose Facebook’s Privacy Policy to anyone here.
Also, I realize that everyone has their own definition of “cluttered” but those tiny little buttons at the bottom of the page ARE NOT CLUTTER. Go type away in a Terminal application if you want nothing but empty text boxes.
And the idea that public, voluntarily posted information (every thing on this board) should be difficult to share (because… you don’t wanna?) is inane, not to mention in direct conflict with the concepts of both this site and the internet in general.
I respect (and generally appreciate) the fact that the SDMB is kind of an isolated corner of the internet, and even the entirety of the internet to some people, but fer fuck’s sake, people.
This
and this…
and this…
and this…
and this.
I feel cheated! All this talk about a Facetube button and all I get is;
Digg del.icio.us StumbleUpon Google
Dammit man, you’re completely wrong! And I’m having a hell of a time typing with these - whatever they are now. I’d spit at you if I could see you!
The rest of you, do not click the Facebook button!!!
Has anyone actually seen this mythical Facebook button yet anyway?
There is no Facebook button. I suggested that there should be one (and so did Stoid, I think) and then everyone (and by “everyone” I of course mean “two people”) started freaking out at the idea that our Internet discussion site would be linked to on the Internet.
You really should watch The Emperor’s New Groove.
