To late to edit but I wanted to add that sometimes people in this state will proffer seemingly rational but non-heat related reasons they feel odd – “it’s my period”…“I took allergy medicine” … “I didn’t sleep well last night”, etc. ---

The grass is about a foot high in places; I’m waiting for a cool spell to mow it. Now it’s getting cooler, but a huge storm the other night turned the yard into a swamp. No mowing. So I’m just staying inside in the AC. The grass can wait. ---

Actually, this is nothing compared to my hike in Utah’s Horse Shoe Canyon (yeah, the same place where that guy cut off his own arm). It was 123 degrees (F) that day, with very little shade. Plus I was over 60, out of shape and diabetic. And for the entire day I was the only person in there, so I had no way to send for help. Couldn’t even call 911, no signal. So I found an overhang and took a nap (passed out) . . . then had to climb up 800 vertical feet, in the dark, to the parking lot . . . using my iPod (sparingly) to keep me on the trail. ---

A few weeks ago I started having severe upper abdominal pain and went to see my doctor who ordered some blood work which showed nothing. Last week I ended up in emergency with the pain. They did an ultra sound which showed gallbladder stones. Then my back tooth broke in half. I had to quickly get it fixed then go to the hospital to have my gallbladder removed. I’m on recovery day two and my monthly visitor just decided to show up. My week sucks. ---

Mowed 5 acres of horse pasture today. Lucky I don’t have respiratory allergies. Lucky it only gets done once or twice a year. ---

So if it was only 90, were you not drinking any water or wearing heavy clothing or something? That seems like a pretty low temp to get heat exhaustion if you were only mowing and doing relatively light yard work. ---

You recognize it’s hot out but not so bad you feel compelled to get a cold drink every 10-15 minutes to rehydrate. You’ll get a glass of water (or a beer!) once the work is done because if you stop _now_ it’ll be hotter later and you might not get back out to finish up…_plonk_ ---

I couldn’t escape it; between being a kid, being a Scout, and playing football in Houston summers, I got the “drink lots of water, even when you’re not thirsty” mantra beat into me like few other things. ---

I was raised in Seattle–we saw maybe 3 dangerously hot days (like 80+!) a year which were spent in front of the TV. Water was beaten into me in The Army in Georgia. I live in Denver now where altitude and dry heat are what’s for dinner all summer long and, well sometimes I remember to have a sip or two. I’ll bring water if I’m hiking at like 8000 feet+ but that’s more to stave off altitude sickies. Otherwise I’ll play outside for a couple hours without trouble. An unhealthy/cavalier approach, sure, but once you get away with it a few times you start to think maybe you’re immune to heat exaustion/stroke.
