Maybe they want to maintain appeal from TFG’s minions, who will vote for them as long as they toe the line. You can hear it in Carlson’s text confession. Something like “He said what!? Crap! Now _ **I** _ gotta embrace that looney stuff or else his supporters won’t like me/vote for me. Dammit!”. Nunes, tho, fits into your narrative - he definitely gave up something to hitch his wagon to the dumpster fire, and it appears he hoped to profit from that decision in some way - he is not holding office and has no need to appeal to voters any more. ---
