What actually happened to medieval lords who ran out of money?

Specifically on the Hundred Years War, Jonathon Sumption’s 5 volume history of same is excellent. (NB 5th volume isn’t out yet).

He has a rather egregious blind spot when it comes to women (men get nuanced character sketches; one woman was dismissed as - this is almost verbatim - “She was mad and evil.” I am waiting with considerably interest to see how the last volume treats Joan of Arc)

But - the scholarship is meticulous, heavily based on primary sources, particularly account books, charters and other dry but official documentation - and his grasp of the detail is immense. It’s very much a chronological approach but he does pull out and address significant themes such as the realities of medieval logistics, the practical scope of royal power in an intelligent way.

It’s not by any means an overview but it’s very readable and will give a very rich understanding of the conflict.
