The well off areas of Jersey are essentially suburbs of other states major cities (NYC/Philly). An easy target to make fun of.
Jersey does not have its own tv stations (with the exception of News 12) and get NY stations and PA stations instead. As a result, NY and PA tv stations report NJ news but typically only when something terrible happens. This hurts NJs reputation in the bordering states and makes it an easy target.
I’m sure the Sopranos didn’t help.
