What are seal skins (etc.) used for?

I’ve eaten seal meat.

Barbcued.

Oily and fishy tasting but with a texture similar to beef.

Imagine what a cow would taste like if it only eats fish. That’s similar to the appearance and taste of seal.

Nasty stuff. And smelly.

But better than walrus.

Everything is better than walrus.

never had sealmeat. but i do love fish. maybe i’d be one of those crazy people who actually enjoy sealmeat.

i think i’m gonna try and get some. if i do, i’ll report my findings.

but nothing is tastier than moose.

And now for the real answer:

  1. To keep seal guts off the snow
  2. Like natural hot dog casings, it provides the killer whales with the satisfying “SNAP” when they bite into a seal dinner. Otherwise it would be like eating oysters, and killer whales hate oysters.

Crazy Newfoundlander checking here.

It really isn’t very economical. But Sealers can make a good chunk of their annual income (about 10,000) in a week or two.

http://www.karlwells.com/review35.htm This review by local weatherman/restuarant reviewer describes flipper pie. (Please forgive if I messed up the link. I am brand new to this!)

(By the way…How does one make the link appear as a word? Where is an appropriate place to find this stuff out?)

I was once served this during a visit to Newfoundland. I recall it being rather good (and not notably fishy).

Winter boots.

Thanks.
Come back for a visit any time… the real delicacy to try is cod tongues. yum.
