What are some song intros that fake you out thinking it is another song?

Sorry, my suggestion of “Heartbreaker” was supposed to reference this post. Forgot to check “Quote msg in reply”.

“Traveling Again” by Dar Williams and “Told You So” by the Barenaked Ladies start almost exactly the same.

Primus’ “John the Fisherman” pilfers a Rush intro, that I’ve seen put some Rush fans into quite a snit.

You’re probably right – to research the term, I’d have to actually listen to the Steve Miller Band*

Do you know what Rush tune? My band plays both John the Fisherman and a lot of Rush tunes as well, and it’s never made me think of a specific Rush song.

For those of you old enough to remember Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young did it on the same album, the greatest hits album. His song Mr. Soul is on side 1 of the album. On side 2, the song Expecting to Fly actually opens with him singing the opening of *Mr. Soul * and then segues into Expecting To Fly. For a long time I’ve wondered why he did this. It works, I just don’t know why he felt it enhanced the song to do it this way.

The first chords of No Doubt’s Don’t Speak and Aerosmith’s Dream On are pretty similar.

“Go to California! GOOOO to live your life!” - Wave - “California”, I believe.

The beginning of that song sounds like Do As Infinity - “Fukai Mori”, and every time I listen to that song, someone says “That sounds like that California song!”

They also excerpted a snippet of “Mr Soul” to kick off one verse of “Broken Arrow”, although not to begin the song.

Darn, Metallica/AC-DC bells was said already, which is why I opened the thread.

Sometimes at a wedding or other party with a DJ, I think they’re going to play Rapper’s Delight but they play Good Times instead. Doesn’t really count though, since they ARE the same. Although the last wedding I went to he played both, which seemed a little odd.

The Beastie Boys are notorious for ripping off Led Zeppelin riffs (can’t recall any of the song titles, though).

I actually thought “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt was more similar to the intro to Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America.”

As for AC/DC’s"Hell’s Bells" versus Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, there is a disguishable difference, if you have perfect pitch. The AC/DC intro is an entire octave lower and plays an A note. The Metallica song’s intro is in Bb.

disguishable -> distinguishable :smack:

And yes, I did preview and proofread!

That’s sampling. I know Rhymin and Stealin starts with the kick drum from When the Levee Breaks, and in searching to check which Zep song it was, I learned that She’s Crafty samples The Ocean.

I used to hear the beginning chords of Pulp’s “Disco 2000” and think I was about to hear “Gloria” by Laura Branigan.

The intro to “Shake Your Hips” from Exile on Main Street, by the Rolling Stones sounds an awful lot like the intro to “La Grange” by ZZ Top. I used to have a mix tape where I put several ZZ Top songs followed by “Shake Your Hips” just to freak people out.

For some reason Pearl Jam’s guitar intro to “Yello Redbetter” always makes me thing that a Hendrix song is coming on.

Am I the only one?

The intro of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer theme song sounds a lot like the intro to Scooby-Doo.

No shit? Does that mean I have perfect pitch (something I deem…doubtful)? I’ve never had a problem telling which song was coming on from the first bell.

Hmmm…is it Ben Folds Five’s “Philosophy”? Kind of similar.
