The Dalton Gang tried to rob two banks in Oct. 1892, and were killed by the townspeople. It’s really a fascinating story, especially how the bank teller tricked them about the “time-locked” safe. They re-create the gun battle every year downtown by those banks. That’s some noisy shit there. If I had a scanner, I’d post the picture I have of me with one of the Dalton brothers (well, the actor, anyway), when I was about 14.
For Atlanta, people have mentioned Ted Turner, Elton John and the Woodruffs, but I’m astounded no one mentioned Martin Luther King.
We have a Boulevard and rapid rail station named after MLK. We have the Martin Luther King Natatorium, as well as The King Center. (Not to mention MLK’s birthplace, which is a national monument, and a whole holiday named in his honor).
I’m sure there are some other MLK sites in Atlanta I’m forgetting about.
Morgantown, WV–
Don Knotts, actor
Jerry West, Hall of Fame Basketball player (but he wasn’t born here, just went to college here)
They both have roads named after them, and they’re planning a Don Knotts Film Festival. Scary thought, isn’t it?
Off the top of my head:
Edgar Allen Poe - I hear he was found dead in the gutter…drank himself to death. I pass by his gravesite every day on the way home from work. It’s about 10 feet from the street
Cal Ripkin
Tom Clancy
David Hasselhoff
John Waters, the film director
Babe Ruth
Edward Norton
Barry Levinson
Robin Quivers (Howard Stern)
Frank Zappa
Sisqo (the thong song guy from Drew Hill)
The guy who wrote the Star Spangled Banner
I had no idea we had so many famous people here?
and Oprah…can’t forget Oprah. I’m not sure she was born here but she started her career on the news here.
