I think I can offer a contribution that fully qualifies as a fuck-you: **Bob Dylan’s "Self Portrait"** A ghastly mish-mash of covers, bad country tunes, and self-parody, Dylan has since admitted what many have suspected: he recorded this album to force his legions of obsessive wanker-fans to finally get the hell off his back, with an album so patently misguided there was no point in trying to plumb it for meaning. ---

Dylan is actually a ShorDurPerSav of mine on occasion… but from what I undersatnd his live shows are often a “fuck you!” to his fans. A few years ago I had the good fortune to catch Tom Petty and Bob Dylan together in concert. The tickets were about eighty bucks each. Not a cheap show by any means. Petty rocked the house, he was on fire and the air was electric. Then Dylan got on stage. Now, I know virtually every song he’s ever done by heart. But once he started singing he was so drunk and/or out of it that I couldn’t even tell what he was trying to sing, and I’m sure he was changing verses around from the snippets of actual English that I could decipher. We ended up walking out after only a few songs, but what was really weird is that by the time we got up to leave, most of the other people in the open air concert hall were already getting up to go. Just a damn shame, it was the only time I’d ever heard him live. But speaking to a bunch of other fans, it’s not anything new. My folks went to see one of his concerts a decade or two ago and then he was also too drunk to speak English. ---

I also think that Jackson was incredibly lucky-he managed to translate a much beloved classic, with a HUGE, very devouted following to film, AND he managed to do it in such a way that the majority of fans LOVED the movies. So many books to movies do NOT end well. Peter Jackson’s was a huge success. I’ll second Anne Rice’s hissyfit on Amazon and add a follow up-when she made her little stand on her “dickensian principles” (whatever the fuck that means), she told people if they didn’t like the book to mail it to her, and she would refund their money, leaving her address there. Only problem was, she had just moved out of that address, and people who took her at her word only had their packages returned, marked “Return to Sender”. How about Axl Rose, taking all the rights to Guns N Roses, including the name, shutting out his former bandmates, and and basically living like a recluse, refusing to treat his bipolar disorder, all the while promising that _Chinese Democracy_ will be out “any day now?” ---

I would like to cast a vote for _Starship Troopers_ the movie being a great big “fuck you!” to fans. If you’re going to make something and play on its name recognition, the least we can expect is that you’re faithful to the source material. It would’ve been easy enough to make a movie called “Future Soldiers” or whatever, but, nope. Le sigh. ---

When GnR were huge back in the day, they were well known for showing up late (or not at all) for their concerts. They had a reputation for it. People bought their tickets then knowing this. I realize the power of seeing someone live that you’ve really, really wanted to see, and I understand that excitement, but when I heard he didn’t show, I wasn’t surprised at all. I was surprised that people thought he would. No way would I buy a GnR or Axl ticket. ---

I’ve seen GnR a few times, and while they may have been a bit tardy, there was never, ever a thought that they might not show up. I don’t think a promoter would even book a tour with a band that has a reputation for skipping shows. Even The Replacements could be counted on to stumble onto stage and hurry through a few tunes. Jane’s Addiction only played three songs (rioting ensued), but they were at least in the same state as the show. Axl was in New York for a Philly show! Late = Arrogant Rock Star No Show = FU, fans!
