What are the biggest "fuck yous" from creators to fanbases? (OPEN SPOILERS)

Make that eight, although I haven’t read Thor for oh…30 years or so I had a subscription way back when. What happened to the T God? Did he just disappear?

Well, yes, except that MMM was done in the studio.

Jerry Pournelle has bascially said “Fuck off!” to everybody who read his Janissaries books. He wrote thre of what looked to be five, then just stopped because he was bored. He won’t even let someone else, like Roland Green, finish the series. So everybody who bought the first three are left hanging. Screw you, Jerry.

I don’t think that’s quite what’s being said – the complaint seems to be that he didn’t bother to find a solution that didn’t screw over the people who weren’t stealing from him. (Wow, what is that, a triple-negative?)

And besides that, the numbers weren’t even that horrible anyway.

Yes, a lot of people didn’t pay (myself included). Bu the fact that he apparently never even finished it is just ridiculous. Finish it. Put it in a collection with a big “Fuck You” introduction to all those fans that didn’t pay. Fine, just do something.

Or, write the whole thing. Put it up for download and then forget about Internet publishing. It’s not like you’re not already richer than god.

Well, I paid. Every time. But I don’t really feel screwed over by it.

While I don’t miss the scouring of the shire, I do think that Jackson did a disservice to Hobbiton by not filming some sort of change. Yes, you do get the “you can’t go home again” vibe, but the way the last movie ends diminishes the struggle the whole lot went through. There’s this giant war, elves, men, ents, orcs, uncountable others are involved from widely separated areas to stop (or aid) an evil that will take over everything. Yet Hobbiton’s unchanged, untouched. The whole melancholy of the elves stems from the fact that they can’t stop the world from changing, yet there’s this little corner of the world that seemingly doesn’t even notice there’s a war going on? It’s rather like someone from Rhode Island being unaware that there’s a war in Iraq, and uninformed on the whole mess that lead up to that war. It doesn’t ring true. While the scouring of the shire had its own faults, it did show that hobbits, while perhaps isolated and removed from the events of Middle Earth, weren’t divorced from them entirely. Jackson’s changes adversely affect this feeling.

There was an episode of the West Wing that some people took as an FU, although I’m not sure it was intended that way. In the episode, Josh finds that there’s a message board site about him, and he posts there and gets into arguments with the other posters, calls them names, etc. Aaron Sorkin had really been posting to some West Wing sites, so it’s basically a parody of that, but some people thought Sorkin was just insulting them.

>> BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! << :::Moderator pounds gavel for attention :::

This forum is for a discussion about art and entertainment. Now, I grant you, there are some discussions that are about facts, but mostly discussions (and certainly a thread like this one) are about OPINIONS. There are no right or wrong answers, there’s only each person’s perceptions and opinions.

You as a fan think that Shakespeare screwed you by having Hamlet die at the end? Fine. You’re entitled to that opinion. Someone else disagrees and thinks Hamlet should have died in Act IV? Fine, they’re entitled to that opinion. Neither of you is right or wrong, you have different opinions. And all opinions and perceptions are equally valid. And in this forum, we discuss them, without insulting the other person for holding an opinion different from your own.

You want to insult the artist/entertainer, go right ahead. You can call Stephen King or Peter Jackson or Douglas Adams or any other writer/director/entertainer any names you want. You can insult them all you want.

BUT YOU CANNOT INSULT EACH OTHER. PERSONAL INSULTS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THIS FORUM. [Yes, deliberate all caps for emphasis.]
OFFICIAL WARNINGS FROM MODERATOR:
Rikwriter: a comment like “nitpicking ingrates” is out of line. STOP IT.

toadspittle: your tone drips of sarcasm directed at another poster. COOL IT.

Equipoise: a comment like “sad pathetic creatures with nothing to do" belongs in the Pit forum, NOT HERE. And you are just plain wrong: criticism of a director IS appropriate here. Your opinion does NOT rule. CUT IT OUT.

Those are just the ones I saw on a quick spin through.

Sheeeesh.

Are we clear on this?

Not really, because that line wasn’t aimed at anyone posting in this thread. It seems a bit unrealistic that we aren’t allowed to speak negatively about ANYONE in the whole world, doesn’t it?

CK Dex I must point out an error!

Equipoise’s directed his insults at the contributing authors to the bookTolkien on Film, which, while provocative, is completely within the bounds you lay out in your post.

As was mine. I think Dex is pretty much overreacting.

I don’t know about that. If I posted a thread titled, “Only morons liked the Lord of the Rings movies,” you wouldn’t take that a tad personally?

But that’s a false analogy, of course, AND it’s also not what Dex was talking about.

The post by Rikwriter that Dex quotes refers to specific authors of a specific book, so your analogy is not well-taken.

Ah. I apologize, I was reading quickly and I thought those comments of Rikwriter’s and Equipoise’s were directed at other posters. My error, and I apologize. It’s perfectly OK to say anything you want about writers, that’s fair game.

Can I ask that you be real clear, though, in future, so that we don’t get such confusions again?

The sad reality is that the two moderators for this forum just do not have the time to read every thread carefully… or even to read every thread. We skim read, here and there, and sometimes it’s hasty and we get a wrong impression. In this case, I got a wrong impressions over and over and over again, from many different posters, and I thought it was a thread gone haywire.

So, just for clarity for future, I’d like to suggest that y’all be specific and use nouns (“The contributing authors to this book…”) rather than pronouns (“they.”) Thanks!

Eh, my note crossed your apology, C K. Good onya’ for noticing. Also, if you are giving mea culpas, toadspittle’s sarcasm, as best as I can tell, was directed towards the programmers at Adult Swim, not to another poster.

I (and Dex, apparently) read it as refering to anyone who didn’t like the Lord of the Rings movies, not just to the authors of that book. But I see that Rik has offrered a clarification, of sorts, so I suppose I’ll retract my comparison.

Sorry Dex for not being clear enough. I definitely wasn’t trying to insult anyone in this thread.

I’m very glad this could be cleared up quickly.

Anyone who wants to continue the hijack can do so in my very first pit thread.

I always got the feeling that Tom Bombadil was placed in the story intentionally as a disharmonious element, much in the spirit of the following:
