Right nearby?
IGA
Valu-Mart
Both expensive and yuppie-ified. Fairly close:
Loblaws
Dominion
Price Chopper
Sun Valley
I like going to different supermarkets, too. I remember standing flabbergasted befor ethe ‘Ethnic Food’ section in a HEB in Texas, looking at… I think there was a jambalaya mix, and some canned Spanish rice. Oh, and the boiled peanuts and prefab pb&j.
Publix rules around here, but we also have Albertson’s, Winn-Dixie (we recently lost our closest store, but it sucked), Super Target, and Wal-Mart Supercenter. There is also a Whole Foods, a Fresh Market (even more upscale than WF, and more “gourmet” than “natural”), and a few 24-hour Goodings stores in the more touristy areas in South Orlando, near the theme parks. Plus we have Bravo (a Hispanic-oriented supermarket) and Super Oriental Mart, which is an awe-inspiring pan-Asian supermarket as large as any Publix. And I’d trade almost all of them for a Trader Joe’s!
When I lived in Miami, we really only had Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Hispanic-oriented chains like Sedano’s, plus a Wild Oats (similar to Whole Foods). We didn’t have any Albertson’s or Kash ‘n’ Karry stores that far south.
Ralphs, Vons, Gelman’s, Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods are the big ones.
I think there are some Rancho Supermarkets that sell B-grade food.
My fave fave market chain of all is still DeMoula’s/Market Basket on the Lexington/Burlington border. It is so insanely cheap and yet the vegetables at our location are very very high-quality.
City Market (2) and Safeway (1) are in our County ('bout half the size of Rhode Island). There is one local place too. Right next to the post office so I suppose that’s how they stay in business.

Central Colorado Rockies.
There is a Piggly Wiggly in Chipley (they have an in-house butcher, yay).
There’s an IGA in Bonifay, and a Dixie Dandy at home in Vernon.
Panama City has Albertsons, Winn-Dixie, Publix, Save-A-Lot, Food World, and Super Wal-Mart.
If it’s the one on Colonial, across from the giant Caribbean Super Market, it actually used to be a Publix. The Caribbean place across the street was originally a Kash N Karry.
New York had Pathmark, Shop-Rite, Walbaum’s, Grand Union, Stop N’ Shop, Food Lion and A&P.
In North Carolina now, I can shop at Kroger, Harris Teeter, and Food Lion. I think my brother said there’s an Aldi’s down in Charlotte(he’s moving down there after his wedding).
In Athens, GA:
Kroger
Publix
Super Wal Mart
Ingles
Bell’s
Southern Family Markets (just bought out BiLo)
Earth Fare (a little baby Whole Foods type store)
I like Publix but could quickly go broke shopping there all the time. I usually stick to Wal Mart, or Kroger if I have a good combo of coupons and sale price. Plus I hit Earth Fare occasionally to stock up on bulk grains and cereals.
I grew up in St. Louis and I miss Schnucks and Dierbergs!! Mostly I wish just one of the grocery stores here had a salad bar instead of deli sandwiches and chicken.
In Montreal suburbia:
IGA
Metro
Provigo
Loblaws
Super-C
Maxi
I like Metro better because things are usually a little cheaper, and the things that go on sale are things I’ll actually buy. I used to go to IGA because it’s pretty much right next door, but their customer service has gone down the drain and I’m tired of cashiers and managers being deliberately rude to me.
I have to drive to Safeway, Giant, Magruder’s, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Wegman’s, etc. But starting tomorrow, I can walk to my brand new Harris Teeter’s! Life is good.
Full stores:
Kroger
Schnuck’s(which was Albertson’s and was originally, and is still to many people, Seesel’s)
Fresh Market(Yeah they’ve got nice stuff, but you might have to take out a second mortgage if you plan on shopping there often)
Aldi(Never been in one)
Super Target
Super Walmart
SuperLo(not sure if there’s more than one, but it’s a good store, it used to be a big star)
Wild Oats(Think Whole Foods, but not as good)
And then there’s Easy Way which just has produce.

It’s on Colonial, but in the Vietnamese area between the Fashion Square Mall and downtown Orlando/I-4. Where are you thinking of? I think a giant Caribbean supermarket would be worth a visit!
Near or reasonably near me are:
[ul]
[li]Albertsons[/li][li]Food 4 Less[/li][li]Ralphs[/li][li]Vons[/li][/ul]
Somewhat farther away are:
[ul]
[li]Trader Joe’s[/li][li]Whole Foods[/li][li]A local chain called Henry’s[/li][/ul]
No Super Wal-Marts or Super Targets in the San Diego area…YET!
The nearest one is Metro (Bigras), but also within walking distance is a Marché Something-or-other (they all have different names!). A very short drive away is a Loblaws and a Provigo across the street from each other which is funny because they are both owned by the same company and offer a similar choice and same brand names. We prefer the Provigo - it’s a lot less busy and we can get most of what we want, although the Metro gets visited more often since it’s just around the corner. I think there are at least 2 if not 3 other Marché stores within walking/short driving distance.
Schenectady, NY:
Price Chopper
Hannaford’s
That’s it for major chains. There are also discount places:
Aldi’s
Price Rite
Save A Lot
(The food all all these is “Buy at your own risk”)
There are also a few local chains/individual stores:
Gabriel’s
Greulich’s
Finally, there are all the stores that no longer exist:
Grand Union (though it appears to be making a comeback)
Shop Rite (still downstate)
Great American
P&C Markets
Albany Public Market
A&P (still around; left here in the late 70s).
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
For major chain grocery stores we have:
Superstore
Save-On-Foods
Safeway
IGA (although some have been recently renamed as Sobey’s)
After hitting submit I remembered that I should include Costco, and maybe WalMart (there’s a couple large ones with expanded grocery sections, but I don’t know anyone who uses them as their primary grocery store).
Safeway, Albertson’s, Fred Meyer, Roth’s, IGA, Food 4 Less, and Waremart/WinCo.
