Oh god yes I hate “hi Opal!” posts. If you really need to show off that you are a childish lurker who wants to say an old inside joke to fit in, why not instead substitute it with “Fuck Zette”, who pointed out the phenomenon in this thread? I also hate it when people say their rant is lame in the Pit. All of the rants are lame these days! Nobody has come out with anything humorous for a bazillion years. Still waiting for another one of LNO’s “I burn with the fire of…” posts, which were creative and funny. We finally killed “all your base”. Thank Allah! Every newb who looks at GD has to post “why G-D instead of God?” in GQ. Search the archives, troglodyte, and you will find your answer! ---

Another one. People who have a joke in their sig line, but post it in every thread. Change the joke every week or be more frugal with it! However, I have seen people use sig lines a lot less. ---

Another vote for the “Hi, Opal” thing. Really not at all funny or interesting anymore. In fact… I’m not sure it ever was. But since “I agree” posts suck ass, I’ll add a few more: Responding to a SDMB complaint thread in the pit with the exact thing someone is complaining about. You’re not fucking clever, you dumbasses. If someone posts “I hate when posters can’t spell!” and 45 people respond with “yeah mee two, thats reely stoopid,” it’s NOT FUCKING FUNNY. EVER. Stop being so god damn predictable, you sons of bitches. And of course, someone will respond to this post with something along those lines. Ha. Ha. That is the main reason I never start pit threads about board behavior, because so many lame boring assholes will post the same unoriginal shit, and think they’re clever for it. Not giving a link to the thread you’re complaining about. We don’t all read every thread that’s posted, so quit assuming everyone knows exactly what you’re talking about. If you say “wow, Ooner was such a cock in this thread. Ban him!” I want a fucking link so I can check out the situation without clogging up the server with a search, or clicking through every forum. Of course you have the thread open, or at least know where it is. Don’t be stupid and lazy. Link it, fucker. Poster worship. I haven’t noticed quite as much of this lately, but posters with cheering sections bug the shit out of me. Jarbabyj kicks ass, and like I said, there’s not so much of this now, but it would always bug the fuck out of me to read posts from people just waiting for her next flame. Get over it. Posters who act like talking to a troll will bring about the collapse of the SDMB. If people want to waste their time feeding the trolls, fucking let 'em. I think it’s kind of funny to see how much reasonable debate you can throw at a complete dumbass without any of it actually being taken into their puny little brains. DNFTT all the time is stupid, and is really just feeding the troll even more. To kind of second a lot of the comments from above: If you’re seen a joke anywhere on the SDMB before, don’t use it. This goes for supposedly clever one-liners. This goes for references to previous threads. This goes for the “Since this is the pit…” joke mentioned above. There is more to SPOOFE than the toothbrush thing (I hope). If it’s been posted before, it’s done. Repeating jokes doesn’t make you funny or clever. It just makes you a dick. I’m sure there’s a ton more, but I’m lazy. So, yeah. ---

Much of the above, of course, but currently, the first on my “Boy it pisses me off” list is the drive-by political snipe. Certainly politics are important. Certainly politics have a place on the SDMB. **But not in _every fucking thread_** It’s fine to be passionate about politics. Passion is good. But not if it’s being used as a crutch. (“Jeepers, I don’t know what to say! I’ll do a drive-by political snipe! That’ll impress 'em!” There are some posters who don’t seem to be able to make a post without babbling about politics. I very much agree with the already mentioned “Hi Opal”, “me too” posting and especially lame attempts at humor when someone tries to be funny by doing exactly what someone is ranting about in a later post in that thread (Poster A: I hate it when people ask for cites, Poster B: Cite please!). Finally the “spewing a soda all over my key board” lameness has slowed down a bit and the “pulling up a lawn chair” idiocy has been halted. It annoys me when someone does an accidental double post and then immediately points it out and informs us all about what mundane mistake they made to make it happen or tells us that that they didn’t know why it happened. Who the fuck cares? It’s obvious that some sort of error happend. Big fucking deal, move on. You already accidently padded your post count so don’t add another one. Haj Haj ---

Things here that look stupid are: When reading a thread post by post and every response says the same fucking thing. When a nice debate is going and a few people decide to take it somewhere else entirely, turning the thing into a big semantic clusterfuck where everyone is trying to save face. It shows no class. And, it’s a HEADACHE to read that crap. Cliche comments. Ass kissers. Bad logic. The way the board software is configured. I still don’t mind the place, though… ---

This is the equivelant of saying “What happened next?” at the punchline of a joke. The most recent example I can think of is the post “What would you do if you were in a room with a terrorist for an hour(something like that) and there were no repercussions?” and just a few posts later you get someone saying, “Well, it’s truly **impossible** for there to be **no** consequences,” and it degenerates into an argument of the merits of the question. I hate that.[/li] [li] Relying on cites from a website with an extremely clear agenda. Especially painful in abortionist issues.[/li] [li] General Question posts that could be solved within 20 seconds by searching the archives.[/li] [li] Pointless comparisons to Adolf Hitler/Nazi Germany.[/li] [li] Posting a spelling correction and :smack: as the sole content of a post. We can understand you meant to say “that” but accidentally wrote “hat.” It’s no big fucking mystery.[/li] [li] Posting a spelling correction but for **someone else** ’s post. I’d like to re-emphasise one that both **lenin** and **Fenris** mentioned: posting a barbed comment or a statement not relevant to the thread just to express one’s hatred of something related to it. Examples include the drive-by digs at conservatives and liberals (or Clinton, or Bush, or Britain, or Israel, or Palestinians, or whatever) in threads trying to discuss detailed issues without resorting to pointless digs. My own personal (least) favourites are computer-related threads where specific advice on a problem leads to at least one “Well, if you had Linux instead of M$ Windows…” post. For crying out loud, it’s a valid debate but _it’s not going to help the poster with their bloody question_. If you can’t post something useful in response to a genuine question, don’t bother. Similarly, MPSIMS, Cafe Society or IMHO threads where someone asks a question about their favourite band or show and some dimwit posts the obligatory “Doesn’t matter, 'cause it was a shit band/show anyway” message. If you hate rap music, don’t bloody post in a thread asking for good rap groups [hypothetical example]. ---

1. Thread titles which tell you nothing whatsoever about the thread. Every once in a while there’s a ‘Please make thread titles descriptive’ campaign, but some posters persist in ignoring this simple policy. 2. Misleading thread titles, designed as a sort of feeble lure to get you to open a thread which you otherwise might not. And this achieves what, exactly? 3. Anyone can make a typo, but some of the utterly incurable and persistent errors try my patience after a while. ‘There’ and ‘their’ / ‘where’ and ‘were’… is it really that hard to learn the difference? 4. Crass sexism aimed at men, the last known target group not ring-fenced by political correctness. Yeah, we’re all dogs, we’re all after it all the time, we’ll get it anywhere we can, we only talk to women we want to sleep with, our one and only motivation is sex, we lack finer feelings of empathy and compassion, we’re slobs, it’s heavy metal and sports all the way yawn yawn yawn. Heaven forbid that among the gazillion males on the planet there should be any who don’t fit the stereotype. 5. The way any GD thread touching on issues of faith, religion or theology tends to degenerate into a mud-slinging insult bath. It’s a shame - faith and theology can be really fascinating subjects, and the opportunity to listen to points of view from all over the world is priceless. 6. In CS, the intrusion of unduly aggressive extremism into what could actually be an interesting exchange of views. The “Such-and-such absolutely sucks big-time and anyone who says different is a retard” type of rant is not as rare as it should be. ---

I get irritated when someone comes into a crush thread and whines about how thye never get mentioned in crush threads. I especially get irritated when it’s someone that registered a month ago and has 32 posts. I mean, 90% of the board never gets recognized in those threads. I don’t know what it is, but this is the sort of self-pity that makes me want to smack the person involved. ---
