(Michigan, early 1960s) “Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts Mutilated monkey meat Itty-bitty birdie feet French-fried eyeballs floating in a pool of blood And me without my spoon!” I see only one person has mentioned the “itty-bitty birdie feet.” As for the worm song, we sang it as: “The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out _The ants_ play pinochle on your snout” “Glory, glory, hallelujah”: The most common version was “Met her at the door with a loaded .44,” but “Hit her in the bean with a rotten tangerine” and “…in the butt with a rotten coconut” were also heard. ---

In Iowa about 1973, I learned this with “milamated monkey meat” and “concentrated piggy feet.” “Milamated” doesn’t seem to turn up anywhere else. The kid who vectored the song probably didn’t know the word “mutilated.” ---

A friend and I were remembering this little tune today, and it occurred to me to Google and see what the “real” words might be. I too am fascinated by the seeming regional variation and by the consistency of the beginning (so to speak). I first heard it and instantly loved it, of course, in early grade school in San Mateo, CA in the late 50’s/early 60’s. I will remember it until my dying day, for whatever reason. Our version, inexplicably, was: Great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts Mutilated monkey meat, roasty toasty birdie doo All rolled up in Peabody’s purple puff That’s what we’re having for lunch. Go figure. This was before the days of LSD in that area, by the way … ---

That was in the early sixties in southern California. My grandfather taught me the one that starts: “Did you ever think, when the hearst went by, . . .” So I’m guessing that some of these are ooold. ---
