My mother was a black licorice snob. She also was fond of Limburger cheese. I avoid both and must have inherited a bland palate. I have preferences in many categories but can’t think of anything I am a snob regarding. ---

So, yesterday my gf told me I’m a snob. A girl I know took her two kids (6 and 8) to Ocean City, Maryland. The pictures she posted on Facebook show her and the kids at the motel pool and at a McDonald’s eating dinner. When my kids were that age, I took them to Ocean City, Maryland. We spent time on the beach, drove to Assateague Island to explore, see the horses, and enjoy a less crowded beach. We ate steamed crabs, clams, corn on the cob, etc. We slept at the motel, never used the pool. My gf says different people enjoy different things, and I’m a snob for not getting that. ---

They can do that, _and_ the beach, _and_ eat crabs. ---

That aside, yes, people like different things. My brother and sister-in-law like to do things like visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder house when visiting Mount Rushmore. ---

There’s nothing wrong with that - but my kids would have preferred the pool every time. Which makes perfect sense since we live about 20 minutes from the ocean and used to go to the beach every weekend but they only got to use a large pool on vacation. I don’t know that “snob” is the word I would use for simply not understanding that people like different things. I think it depends on the reason for not understanding - there are people who are absolutely being snobs when they say they don’t understand why people stay at resorts on vacation rather than rent an apartment and experience a different culture for a couple of weeks. But there are also people who don’t understand without actually being snobby - like some acquaintances I have who don’t understand why the rest of us like to go to nicer restaurants than McDonald’s or even Outback. They aren’t being snobs - they truly would eat People Chow if there was such a thing don’t understand people who eat for pleasure in any way. ---

But if I were going somewhere like Ocean City, I would sure make a point to have the kids at least briefly experience (and take pics of) the ocean and seafood - or basically anything I couldn’t do at a hotel and McD’s near me. ---

My Wife and I prefer the pool to the beach. We used to SCUBA. So no fear of the ocean. We do like being closer to our room I think. Mostly, around the pool, we will read. I used to play a lot of pool volleyball, but, sadly my body is even getting beat up from that. Blew a knee out doing that once. ---
