Many moons ago my husband was scandalized that I-- a brown woman who spent many a hot, summer day at the dollar fiddy chopsocky, blacksploitation movie theater-- had never heard of, much less seen, **Dolemite** He went to the video rental place to rectify the situation. Maybe if I had seen it when I was nine. . .? If you love the original Shaft and Foxy Brown movies you will hate how this blacksplotation film shits on them. Hubby says he thinks it was trying to be funny. _Thinks_. Even he’s not sure if it’s supposed to be funny or not. ---

I’ve never seen the movie, but Dolemite is My Name starring Eddie Murphy was pretty good. Did not inspire me to go see any of Rudy Ray Moore’s movies, though. ---

But then he goes and makes _The Straight Story_, where the Lynchian twist is, there is no Lynchian twist; it’s a perfectly sweet story about an elderly man in Iowa who decides to visit his estranged brother in Wisconsin, and drives the only vehicle he has available: his riding mower. He meets a variety of people along the way, most of whom treat him kindly. Nothing surreal or horrifying or weird about the story, which is based on an actual incident. ---

Have you ever seen “The Straight Story”? That movie was great - and rated G, no less! There were a few scenes that could have gotten the Lynch treatment, but didn’t. ---

I saw this at a cinema in Riga with a bunch of American tourists, and the first thing I said when we were back on the street was “I want my money back!” Ignoring the ridiculous plot of the heist, a sizzling-hot Catherine Zeta Jones wanting a guy old enough to be her grandfather as a life partner? With all due respect to the late Mr Connery, I’d believe in Bigfoot and the Tooth Fairy before I could swallow that. Another movie you’ve probably never heard of is _ **Oblomov** _, based on the novel of the same name by Ivan Goncharov. I had to watch it in a class called “Russian History through Russian Literature,” where I learned the true meaning of boredom. It was an excruciating 2 hours and 20 minutes that made _ **Remains of the Day** _ look like an action flick. ---

**The Blair Witch Project.** 1999 Found Footage Horror film. I’m usually all in when it comes to a good horror movie—I love the thrill that comes with a good scare and the rush of adrenaline when you let yourself get lost in the story. But when it comes to _The Blair Witch Project_? I just don’t get the hype. For me, it was a total miss. The film felt like a drawn-out, aimless slog that left me more annoyed than scared. The shaky camera work? It was more nauseating than anything else. The plot? Virtually nonexistent. And the scares? Well, they never showed up. Instead of being pulled into a creepy atmosphere, I was stuck waiting around for something—anything—to actually happen. By the time it was over, I wasn’t frightened; I was just aggravated. For me, _The Blair Witch Project_ was more of a bore than anything else. I couldn’t stand it. ---

Highlander II is by far the worst movie I’ve ever paid money to see. It wasn’t even good to make fun of. “Cats” was genuinely horrific too. It’s actually WORSE if you understand and appreciate musicals - knowing about musicals doesn’t make it more tolerable, it makes it less tolerable. ---

If I remember the Rusian literature classes correctly, _Oblomov_ was the epitome of the _лишний человек_, the superfluous man, whose whole existence is pointless. I agree that watching such a movie must be unbearable boring, and I’ve never found the courage to read the novel, in spite of its classic status. ---

Not sure what you mean. I hate the movie because it uses the death and horror of the Viet Nam war as nothing more than a vehicle for Wiliams’s narcissistic schtick. Disgusting.
