I am being disgustingly practical. My mom uses a walker from time to time, and she has a hard time working an umbrella when she does. So, I got her a push-button open and close umbrella. I felt sort of guilty when I took it to the UPS place today and the guy asked if it was perfume. Nope, it’s an umbrella, sez I, and it was all wrapped in flowery paper with a card, so it was obvious to all and sundry that I got my mom an umbrella for Mother’s Day. But I think she’ll really like it. ``` What are you gettin' your mom? ``` ---

Mom gets money for me on Mom’s day and her birthday. I go all-out and get her stuff for Christmas, but I never know what to get her for the other days. But she usually uses the money to go to Atlantic City, which she loves, and so it is a good thing. I have thought about trying to give her a trip to AC instead, but it is better to let her pick her own schedules. ---

A card. I love her and all, but she doesn’t need any more crap. We are flying her up for her birthday, though, so there are worse sons out there. ---

I’m making her a card, with glitter and stickers and everything. She was saying the other day how all her kids grew up too fast and she’s feeling old, so I thought this might make her smile. And I’ll take her shopping next week and buy her some nice things for spring. ---

My parents don’t really get presents from the kids–maybe in a few years Mom’ll start getting flowers sent or something. Anyway, Dad’s gift for Mom is a recirculating pump for the hot water heater. Yeah, I pretty much thought the same thing when I was told that. ---

A book on “Jewish Yoga”, which my mom is apparently getting very into. I think ordering flowers online/via phone is sort of lame, as you can’t give them yourself, so I tried to put some thought into it. ---

I got her a little book about Audrey Hepburn. It’s all just quotes from Audrey Hepburn. It’s called “How to be Lovely.” I kind of wish it wasn’t called that because it’s a bit like I’m giving my mom a manual on how to be less of a gargoyle. I’m sure it will all work out. ---

My mother is getting a card and a phone call, because I’m getting her a plane ticket to Texas in August for a family reunion. My mother-in-law is getting a card and flowers, because she gets a little upset if we don’t send flowers. And my monster, whom I love madly, is getting a card and flowers as well. And she’ll tell me that I don’t have to get her anything for mother’s day because she’s not my mother, and I’ll tell her that life is so full of things I have to do and it’s nice to do something that I don’t have to do. (an old family joke) ---

Both mom and mil are getting flowers and a card. I sent my mom flowers this week already so it will be her second flower delivery. They both love receiving flowers so hopefully they will like these. ---

I’m getting my mom absolutely nothing. She’s just recently completed a 23 day passage to the Marquesas and will be sailing between the islands, so I can’t call and I can’t send anything. However, the last time I spoke to her she asked that I send something to her mom instead, so grandma’s getting some Harry&David mail-order fruit. ---

Ditto - absolutely nothing. First, she’s been dead for 11 years so it would be pretty futile. Secondly, I never bought her anything while she was still alive, my motto being “I never give you a second thought for 364 days of the year, so why should today be any different?” I was being ironic, of course; she wasn’t such a horrible old bag really. ---

In a box I found an old mothers day card from when I was probably 4 or 5 that has my handprint on the front that on the inside is printed in very 4-year-old like fashion, “I LOVE YOU MOM” (reverse some of the letters for effect)… plus the “This Old Cub” Ron Santo DVD. ---

My older sister and I are breaking tradition this year. Usually, it’s the big brunch with all of my sister’s kids, and the husband, and all of the circuses that all of that entails.
